I don't think anyone said to look at the tilt meter only. I think Greg summed up the operating with a tilt meter question pretty well.
I've got one and I use it to adjust my pucker factor when needed. Although it's just my opinion, it is shared by many.
You just have to remember that it isn't the holy grail of slope estimation, but it is a pretty good tool.
