JD 790
I am looking at the KK tillers. I will mostly use one for food plots and most areas have already been broken. I am concerned about the few places that haven't. Would I be better with the 5' and plan on two passes on these areas or should I go with the offset 4' model?

I'd go with the 5 footer... you should have more than enough power to run it.

My dad has run a 4' tiller behind his JD 650 (14.5 pto hp) since it was new in 1984 with no problems whatsoever. He tills and plows gardens for people as a side business, has been doing it ever since he got the 650, still doing it today, same tractor and tiller. He's probably paid for his equipment 4-5 times over by now. I can tell you without hesitation, he's gotten into some "unimproved" areas with it!

5' is only 12" more, and you have nearly double the HP.

Don't sweat it!!

GONO,

If it's any consolation, I just picked up a 6' KK tiller the other day to use behind my Mahindra 3525 (27 PTO HP), but KK recommends 35 hp for it. I'm not worried in the slightest.

So, get the 5' tiller. That way we'll be able to cry together if it doesn't work out:p!! Although, I have absolutely no plans for a pity party!!!:D:D

I think KK is a little "conservative" on their HP estimates, by about 5-7 hp at least. In Dad's case, he's got 3.6hp/ft available to him, with very good performance. You'll have 4.8hp/ft with your setup. I'll have 4.5hp/ft with mine. I think we'll both be OK...;) Dad's been doing just fine for 24 years with his.

Power requirements depends upon your ground condition and how deep you want to go on the first pass.

Your 790 is a little larger than my Yanmar and I use a 4.5 ft tiller on it without any problems power wise. On my garden plot, it's a piece of cake. Re-did the pasture last fall ( hadn't been worked in ovr 30 yrs) and started to do the work before the fall rains came. Didn't have the weight to get more than an inch or two. After a few days of rain I could get down closer to 4 " which was what I was trying to do on the first pass.

You shouldn't have any problems with a 5' model but depending upon the ground, you may have to go slower or shollower than you'd like on virgin soil.

I have a Yanmar YMG2000 and run a 5' tiller with no problem at all. This is about the same tractor HP and size wise. Get the five footer. big dan

I know I am good with my 5' cutter. I am always amazed at what it will cut without bogging down. I have just never owned or used a tiller and wanted to be on the safe side. Looks like 5' it is!

GONO2:

I believe the KKII tiller specifications are pretty conservative. My NH TC29DA is very similar to your JD 790 and I have no problems running my 58" tiller through my NE heavy, clay based, and rocky soil. I do make two passes. I sometimes make three if I am tilling a new bed through sod. You definitely want a tiller wider than your wheel width. Jay

I just bought a 5 ft king kutter for my Ford 1710. 27 hp engine & 24 PTO hp. I haven't got the chance to use it yet but I'm not too worried. I figured if 5 ft was to much I'd just remove one set of tines and have a four foot tiller and still have a 5 foot tiller to sell down the road. I figured a used five foot tiller would be more in demand when it came time to sell it.

I sold a 5ft KK to a man I know whose tractor is about the same HP yours is and he's happy with the job its doing for him. When we hooked it up I thought he'd have to add front weights but his cadet handled it ok
