three point trailer hitch pictures

I want to fabricate a trailer hitch to work off my three point hitch. I have a fifth wheel that I want to move about and a pop up. I was wondering if there are similar draw bar photos out there to share? Here are pictures that I took several years ago at an RV dealer. I have an old mopar frame that I will cannibalize to get started on. Any photos out there? Inside the channel is a pipe so that the pin does not get hooked up on a raw edge.

None of the pre-made hitches I have seen are set up to move a fiver. The pics you have are interesting, but I wonder how they keep the pin receiver at a 90 degree angle to the pin when the three point is lifted?

I would make it by coming up with a type of gimbal set-up that would allow the receiver to move side to side as well as back and forth. This would keep the receiver tight to the pin box as the grade changes that you are pulling the trailer over.

Do you think the tractor will be heavy enough to keep from being lifted by the trailer? By the time you add the hitch out the back it gives the trailer quite a bit of leverage.

That must be a bit scary with a fifth wheel looming over the operators head!

I've actually built a couple of these for my work for forklifts, that's how they move the trailers in and out of service bays and display. First one was pretty crude, just a frame that slide over forks that had a ball and a box with a hole. The weight of the fifth wheel keeps it held onto the pin box. Problem was with no suspension on the forklift it would crack the fiberglass of the trailer.

Next one was pretty cool...it was built with big trailing arms out of an rv with a big airbag in the center to provide suspension and a shock absorber to control bounce. The pin box also pivoted . It is still in use 16 years later!

Here are some with the same attachment using my quick hook/unhook wagon hitch welded to a 2" receiver hitch. I don't have to leave the seat hooking and unhooking cotton wagons, feed wagons, silage wagons, etc... The last pic also shows my trusty sidekick.

I have one built into my ballast box. Had an old receiver hitch designed to be bolted to a pickup truck step bumper. I cut a square hole in the ballast box, poked the receiver through from the inside out and then welded the receiver in place inside of the ballast box. Probably could have just as easily drilled the ballast box bottom and bolted the hitch into place also.
The tilt on the ball can be adjust by using the 3PH top link.

My tractor is a New Holland 3045 which is 4000 lbs without anything just the tractor. The dry hitch weight for my trailer is 1600 lbs. With my loader on and such I would be heavier then the tractor in the photo. I have been using my truck to shuttle the trailer out of the garage to a pad a couple of hundred feet away I have made for it but think the tractor would be less bother. I like the gimble idea if I could get and old hitch and fab it to the top that might be ideal.

Here is some pics of a fiver pin, note that the pin is attached to a 10"x10" skid plate. A service guy at the RV show here in Toronto said that they use a fork lift truck with a fabbed piece they put right on the forks, just a 2.5" piece of pipe is all, go figure.

I also have been contemplating making a hitch for the 5er...
I have an old hitch that I could fab onto the three-pt but was not certain if that was necessary.
Also thought that just a pipe that was say 1/2 bigger would compensate for most leveling. I have a hydraulic top link as well as on one of the three-pt arms. So keeping the hitch level should be no problem.
However would like to here more Ideas....

There are skid plates that have hitches on them which would be easy to attach a piece of pipe to. If you have skid steer attachment on the loader and the loader capacity for your dry hitch weight which is for me around 1600 lbs. Loader capacity over 2000 lbs.

This is the hitch I made out of an old truck hitch. Welded the top link brace-thats was the only thing I added. I have a 5th wheel also and actually seen what I think you want at our RV dealer.. I tried to draw it on the hitch I made below. It was a a old piece of plate steel with a grove cut in it for the king pin to go thru. Then it was a simply piece of 1/2 round steel that they used to lock the king pin in place.. If I get by the dealer I will take a picture of it.. It was actually pretty cool, but was on a lot bigger tractor than I have...

I move my trailers around with my loader bucket. Using the front of the tractor you can turn on a dime with superior control. I welded a receiver to the top of my bucket and made a ball mount with an 18" drop. In the case of your fiver a straight bar would probably work.

To answer your first question is easy.

The 3PH on tractors is a parallelogram linkage. IF you are making your on, and make the toplink mount on the hitch the appropriate distance so that it is parallel to the lower links, AND set the TL so that it is the same length, the hitch will remain perfectly level through out the 3PH range of movement.

The farther you deviate away from parallel and same length, the more it will change. But you can get close and the angles dont change by much.

I know it does nothing for grade changes. But in reality, roads arent flat either when towing behind a truck.

As to the weight, it will depend on how much tongue weight the trailer has. But even a small tractor can lift/support a pretty good amount of weight on the 3PH. My small L3400 'bota is rated @ almost 2000lbs at the ball ends.
