I like the idea, but I am guessing you do not have a deck over, as most deck overs are 96 or 102" wide, you could not use this on any of the side rails.(from what I can see you could not face the tire inward as the tire would hit the deck before the stake was inserted in the pocket) I could add a pocket to the front, but then my A-frame storage cover/hatch would not fully open. But again thank you, I was not aware of that option.
I bought mine but you could easy weld one up that is taller. I was just in a hurry and dint have the time to do it. They are nice but they do interfere with the sides of the trailer.

Any chance the truck spare could be made to work on the trailer (or trailer spare work on the truck). Then you don't need to carry an extra tire. Chances of flats on truck AND trailer are low.

Great idea! Unfortunately they use different number of Lugs.

Yep, I have a truck spare tire winch I mounted under my steel deck car trailer. Works great , I have a aluminum truck tool box mounted on the front that houses the recovery winch and tie down equipment in, I keep the crank handle for the spare in it. I made mine to crank down from the right side of the trailer that way if your roadside you are out of traffic as much as possible.

my Ram has 8 lug wheels but they are 20 inch, my trailer has 8 lug wheels and are 16 inch. I have not tried them to see if they would fit.

Pulled a underbody tire winch from an S-10 blazer which seems like it will work very well. The winch mounts away from the cable outlet with a rigid pipe in between. Therefore the bulk of the winch will not be above the tire, saving space above it and the rod to drive it will be much shorter as it will be closer to the outside frame rail. I HOPE!! Froze my tail off getting it off and swore I'm not crawling under a trailer until I'm lying on cut grass. Hope this image works. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/yxEAAOSwm5Nd4pWB/s-l640.jpg

Following. Need to put a toolbox or chain box on the trailer & the spare tire takes up the ideal location.

Update. Short version; I will post pictures soon. Long version. I heard a co-worked had an old 2000ish ford 150 that was headed to the junk yard, so I was able to get the spare carrier, and crank from it. Started planning/working on installing it, and seemed to literally hit some issue with everything I tried. (1st mounting method was close, but not actually low enough to clear decking, 2nd plan would have placed crank handle hole dead even with horizontal/vertical intersection of I-beam web, etc.) so I suppose success came cheap, but not easy... again thank you to all who replied.
