Because of a good deal I'm considering getting one on a 299d xhp. ... but, this will be my only mulcher for a while. Does it produce a good finished product in a reasonable amount of time?

Can't give you any first hand experience with speed or finish. But I know of a few people who had nothing but trouble out of the head itself. Mainly with the disc loosening from the Shaft it's mounted to with little to no help from AFE getting it fixed. That and getting parts would take 3 to 4 weeks for them. If you can get the machine without head you may want to look into that.

We had good service out of our excavator mounted AFE head, can't speak for the SS model. They don't like big material. I would compare them more to a heavy rotary mower than a drum mulcher. It takes more passes to get a clean product. 1st pass leaves a lot of large debris behind, just like a rotary cutter. Teeth are cheap, but don't last very long.

Is it cost effective to use an afe instead of a rotary cutter?
