I'm going out on a limb here but it just seems there is no end to sexual harassment stories these days and wanted to relate the other side...

My good friend and co-worker was visiting his parents when two deputies knocked on the door... my friend opened the door and the deputies asked for Bill Smith... my friend said Senior or Junior?

The deputies looked at the paper work and said born in 1949... ok... senior.

My friend said Dad, the police are here to see you... Dad comes to the door in his wheel chair and the deputies looked perplexed.

The Sheriff had culled the files looking for predators and Bill Smith Senior's name came up... and there was silence.

Now here is the rest of the story...

Bill was 18 and about to ship out to Vietnam... his girlfriend was just shy of 18.

Bill and his girlfriend eloped without her parents permission... totally wrong... I get that and it happened in 1968.

The girls father was livid... old school Portuguese and raised ****... he wanted the marriage annulled and the Bill arrested for the Mann Act... transporting a minor across State Lines...

Bill was in the service so the DA was in no hurry and the Bill's wife wanted no part of it and her mother was silent...

Anyway... shortly after Bill Junior was born in 1969 the parents softened some... Bill sent all his pay to his wife and whatever else he could do... including life insurance... wrote all the time and she had the stack of letters to prove it.

So 50 years after the deed and 50 years of marriage producing one child this all comes back and Bill Senior has to register as a sex offender

This story and what I read in the media has got me thinking there has to be a statute of limitations... going back 50 years is just plain crazy as is waiting decades to speak up...

Don't get me wrong... but it just seems like common sense.

That one makes sense as folks made noise at the time.

Today's witch hunt are folks who MAY have used the tools they were born with to seek advantage and things may not have went as planned but due to their actions did not make noise as it would have clear maybe the actions then long time later folks make noise.

If an action is rape or assault it needs to be addressed at the time and usually was.

The Witch hunt is making harder for valid victims to be taken seriously.

Good point... never considered that.

I work in an industry often dominated by women... one male to nine females is about where the Hospital staffing it right now and about 50/50 for docs... all of the managers at my site plus most of the senior corp are women.

We had one paramedic the younger women were just relentless... every time he had a drop off they would give him a bad time... one of the techs boasted in the break room she can get any man she wants.

I can only imagine what would happen if the shoe was on the other foot...

For decades the men's and women's locker rooms were kept well stocked with scrubs by Central Services... the woman who maintained the area was never an issue... always knocked before entering the men's locker and if a Doc needed help she would make sure to have the scrub or cap he preferred.

When she retired, her replacement was male... that last all of one day... he did nothing wrong and was well liked... had a family and 3 girls... the women went to management and said it was not appropriate for a man to restock the scrubs...

Yet, not a single male Doctor ever complained about Rosa stocking the men's locker room... and it was not even the older nurses or any of the women Docs complaining... the ones that complained were under 30 women...

Man what a shame for ole bill. It’s getting ridiculous. Our patriotic enthusiasm is being replaced with a victim mentality. Before you know it women are going to be getting upset when nobody gives them attention and start raising cane then

To me, these women are un-doing alot of the gains from "women's liberation" of the past 30+ years and like mentioned, making a real victim questionable. I wonder what this will do for women in a work situation that is mostly male, perhaps like many offices. Would a smart manager add more women to the mix if a position became open, or just nudge it towards an all male staff? The answer is obvious with today's "me too" attitude.:confused3:

I don't know about the rest of the country, but in this Province you had better not whistle at a woman walking down the street. That very act in itself will get you charged with sexual harassment.

Dang, that's bad. Around here a lot of women live for those moments. Society is trying to neuter all males..

This bbc op-ed articulates a number of points well....

Why women fear a backlash over #MeToo - BBC News

..... including one of the first things I thought of..... Pence got it right ! The Pence rule broke in the news well before #metoo took off. He took some criticism at the time for being out of touch, old-fashioned...... but was obviously astute enough to recognize the minefield he was walking through.

This topic came up recently where I work. My boss's comment (female boss, in a male dominated industry) - "Use some common sense". Depending where you work, that is getting harder to do.

Any actual assaults need to be dealt with rigourously, by both the police and the courts. As touched on in the bbc article slightly - what is considered assault though ? Depending on who is involved (world view, social agenda, cultural background....) a simple pat on the shoulder may be a problem, or no big deal....

Can't say I've formally studied the stats (stoneypoint level), but I've often seen in print that actual cases of rape tend to go under-reported, for a variety of reasons. The systemic factors that cause that under-reporting deserve attention, and it can take something as publicly messy as this to drive change.....

At the other extreme, one thing that came to mind is the Salem Witch Trials. With the trawler net that is out there now, there will be some collateral damage involving innocent people. Lives and careers can be wrecked by nothing more than somebody with a (unrelated to the accusation) score to settle.

Notice that I said "people" in the previous paragraph. There is usually a "spin" to what is going on, that I often find troubling..... ur's example of the male paramedic is apt - women are also quite capable of sexual harassment and assault - want to talk about under-reporting of assault ? That paramedic's situation would be a good example.

Back to my boss's point about common sense (or, as I've taken to calling it, UNcommon sense.....)..... I was reading a thread about workplace issues on another site, that struck on real vs. perceived "problems". It contrasted insults on the shop-floor (amongst workers who knew each other well enough to have a friendly exchange - think of the barber-shop scene in Gran Torino....) with actual (but well disguised) discrimination being practiced in the executive suites..... as a worker, I know which situation I'd sooner deal with.....

I don't have an issue with closed door meetings or working alone with my female boss. Even w/o the recent media climate, that is not something I do blindly. We both happen to be people with our heads screwed on well - definitely not something I assume lightly.

I know plenty of women who (for reasons unrelated to this thread) prefer to work with men. Some of the issues we've touched on here are causing men to reconsider their view of the workplace.

Special statute of limitations with California Child Sexual Abuse

Generally speaking, any legal action for an injury to a minor child in California, either physical or mental, is tolled until the child’s eighteenth birthday, meaning a lawsuit or settlement needs to happen within two years from the date the minor child turns eighteen. However, allegations of sexual abuse while a person was a minor child, contain special time frames for legal actions in California. In a legal action for a person over the age of eighteen, recovering for sexual abuse that happened while he or she was a minor child must be as follows: the time for the commencement of the legal action must be within eight years of the date the person attains the age of majority (eighteen years old) or within three years of the date the person discovers (or reasonably should have discovered) that psychological injury or illness occurring after the age of eighteen was caused by the sexual abuse, whichever period expires later, for any of the following actions:

1. An action against a person for committing an act of childhood sexual abuse;

2. An action for liability against any person or entity who owed a duty of care to the plaintiff, where a wrongful or negligent act by that person or entity was a legal cause of the childhood sexual abuse that resulted in the injury to the plaintiff;

3. An action for liability against any person or entity where an intentional act by that person or entity was a legal cause of the childhood sexual abuse that resulted in the injury to the plaintiff.30

There are numerous exceptions to the above rules. An experienced child injury attorney will need to be consulted in order to see if you have a case for childhood sexual abuse.

Child Abuse Agencies

Unfortunately, child abuse is a reality in today’s world, but there are some steps you can take in order to be proactive. If you suspect child abuse by a sexual offender, or if child pornography was involved, you can contact the following agencies for immediate help:

1. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
2. California Child Protective Services (CPS)
3. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
4. U.S. Department of Justice—Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section. See this link, to the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section with the Department of Justice Web site, for an explanation of how to report child pornography to the U.S. legal authorities: Page not found | DOJ | Department of Justice
5. Your local police department special victims unit
6. Your local U.S. Postal Service;
