Thoughts of a Land Surveyor.

   / Thoughts of a Land Surveyor. #71
When learning surveying under a previously mentioned curriculum...we had access to some original surveying field notebooks...many were from previously unexplored areas of FL...there were several mentions of lost rod men etc. due to things like indians, quicksand, alligators etc., etc...

Early railroad and route location notebooks often referenced having to move graveyards...there are several references to finding skeletons that had clumps of hair in the finger bones...indicating that the subjects had only been presumed dead when buried...!

My Great Grandfather, who I am name after, was sent to map the Amazon in Columbia for Union Oil Company oil exploration... he created the first maps of previously uncharted territory... he was also killed by natives...

The accounts read like an Indiana Jones novel...

It was then an there I decided I did not want to following in his footsteps... surveying wilderness cost him his life.

He did send back a collection of flora and fauna that was all donated to the Oakland Museum... some first discoveries... exotic butterflies and such.

About the only things we have are his pistol, leopard skin and boa skin...
