C'mon guys,
I S i m p l i f i e d the formulas /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif just for conversation sake! I don't want to be in physics class again! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Wow, I was called "dude". I think it was about 1984 the last time gave me that honor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looks like you have forgotten a little pysics as well. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Seems that lately, my posting brings the thread to a screeching halt..... must have done something right this time. As for the physics part of the equation, I will leave that to someone that cares to do it. All I do know is that at 30 MPH or 50 MPH, hitting another car/truck head on is going to hurt no matter what the size of the vehicles, unless the truck is a 18 wheeler and the other truck is a pick up. In the instance posted originally, I would say that both trucks were just about equal for my mathematical calculations. Anyone care to calculate the G forces of a 200 pound male hitting the steering column in that hypothetical accident????? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Junkman, that hurts my liver just thinking about it. I think I'm just going to avoid hitting oncoming objects on narrow roads.

Got the kissing mirror syndrome last nite with an excursion. I live on a narrow street, and saw the dope accelerating taking up her 3/4 of the road. I even was on the shoulder gritting my teeth for the inevitable. Bam, her dumbo ears and mine met. Surprised me she even stopped! I told her two things, slow down and sometimes you have to even moveover. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif It broke my ground wire for my crappyband radio antenae, she deservedly suffered a little more. She broke her lights out that are on the newer Superdudes and Excursions. This was a completely avoidable accident, due to haste and " I'm important" on her part. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I must really be aging, I let her live!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I've noticed oncoming vehicles will take all the room you will give them. I you move over onto the shoulder they will move over more towards the center.

I hold my line.

I don't remember breaking a mirror here stateside. But in Viet Nam I broke five in about four months. Two kids driving five tons or duece and a halfs on a narrow road. Something's got to give.

I helped a bud change out his driver's side mirror this week on his 2005 four door single wheel one ton Dodge. In a contruction zone he'd had a semi move over into his space and take out the mirror. Four hundred dollars I think he said it cost.

Hi Harv; I suppose I should consider myself lucky in that I didn't have a trailer behind me. There's not much doubt that she'd have taken out the fender and at least one tire. But then again, it might be interesting to see what my flatbed might have done to her excursion!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is twice I've met mirrors with this truck, each time no real damage to mine. But comeon now, how do you miss a RED truck? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

wroughtn_harv,
That's the problem. When you have two holding their line - ( Something's got to give. )
that's the whole problem. At least my mirror didn't break this time. (This is the third time I've done that - when it happened a 55, it did break the mirror.)

Let's see - to recap
I start this thread to kick a little sand in the Ford owners' faces about the mirrors on their trucks.
Then, another mirror story with a tree.
Next, zoom with his GMC kicks a little sand in our faces about the neat power folding mirrors on his pickup.
To which, I agreed that's a useful feature and talk about the useless heated mirrors and poke at Detroit for feature bloat.
Then, zoom wants Detroit to add a sliding rear window like the TOYotas have.
This idea is seconded.
Next, edski insults our (Ford & Dodge owners) driving skills
Then, I mention the stubborness to yield on a narrow road.
And now, someone agrees the folding mirror feature is a cool concept - which leads into some lies that a salesman told him. (they'll say anything to get people to take TOYotas seriously)
Now, _RaT_ insults TEXANS
Then, I remind all that it is about keeping a cool head while driving and not hit revenge mode.
Next, Robert provides anecdotal evidence that all Ford's mirrors aren't that bad, after all, his lower mirror made it through after being hit by a bus, so it's all about how you connect when getting hit.
Then, junkman lectures about frame of mind, what if, physics, and the obvious fact that crashes hurt. (DUH)
Then _RaT_ insults our truck brands and agrees about injuries.
Next, Jagmandave makes errors in his physics and asks us to use our bean.
Now, _RaT_ tries to figure out physics and offers to hit a truck at 30mph rather than a wall and wants someone to show him how he is wrong.
Then, I tell _RaT_ he's wrong give a vague physics form.
Next, getut expands on the physics lesson.
Kubotasteve haises his hand in physics class
GeneD14 complains of being in physics class again.
I mentioned that physics class should be over.
_RaT_ mentioned no one has called him dude since 1984, and pokes at me about my formula.
Now, junkman admits to sabotaging posts, and then shows us how with more physics.
_RaT_ gets tickled at junkman and decides to be a good driver.
johnday explained how he got kissed by a soccer mom on his narrow street by someone who thought they were important.
wroughtn_harv explains his technique to insist that you must pull over to avoid hitting his mirror, then has a Vietnam flashback, then, remembers he helped a buddy change his broken mirror.
johnday wants to kiss soccermom's excursion with a trailer.
Then, I mention how wroughtn_harv's technique is how this happens.

Next,
I attempt to see how off topic this thread has gotten.
Thank you.. Good Night
Is this mic still on?

( Actually, two vehicles travelling at 30 mph run into each other is like hitting a wall at 30 MPH.............think about it........

OK, now I'm trying to understand this better. Two vehicles traveling 30 mphs towards each other have a closing speed effectively equal to 60 MPH. Thus, I say the amount of energy transferred as far as momentum is concerned is 60 mph. I suggest it is not like hitting a wall at all unless the wall crumples similar to that of a Ford or Dodge truck. I would rather hit a truck at 30 mph then a immovable, non collasable solid wall. Correct me where I am wrong. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif )

Sorry for the late come in here but this is a pet hobby horse of mine. It doesn't take physics or math to understand the basics. Just a bit of thinking.

2 vehicles (of near equal mass) colliding head-on at 30: Each will have a felt impact of 30 mph. Why? Because both come to a stop from 30 mph, not 60. The total energy is a function of 60 but it is shared by both vehicles, 30 each.

Does hitting that stone wall at 30 MPH hurt any less than at 60 MPH?????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

/ Those darn Narrow Roads... #39
So if I'm walking at 2mph into a:
1) Wall,
2) a 2 mph truck,
3) a 2 mph bodacious blonde
It all feels the same??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The wall will give you a bruise or a bloody nose....
the truck might give you a cut or two......
the blonde will give you a black eye, scream for help, and some big brute of a guy will beat the crap out of you, and then have your sorry a.. put in jail...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
