If you were to put a 1 micron filter in the PTO circuit, I think that it would blowup, and put a lot of debris in your system.

Your tram pump oil is being filtered, at 10 microns, but only when the charge pump is replenishing any oil lost in the circuit. I don't think you could even add a bypass filter in the tram circuit, because of the pressure.

They do make 3000 psi filters, and you could put that in the PTO circuit, but I would suggest a filter housing with a gage. It is also in the $75.00 to $100.00 range. I don't think they make a 1 micron filter that will take 3000 psi.

I would think the best place to put a 1 micron filter, would be to tap into the output line of the oil cooler. The pressure should be low and you would be filtering some of the oil, at 2 or three quarts a minute.

The problem with the current filter is that being on the charge pump, it would take a long, long time to filter all the oil. Note that once filtered, you're dumping that cleaner oil back into the dirty tank, where it gets mixed right back in with the rest of the dirty oil, "diluting" what's there only a little bit. You'd have to pump many times more than the 10 gal volume (in the case of the PT-425) through the pump to ever get most of it cleaned, since it keeps getting mixed right back into the dirty oil. Trying to do this with only the charge pump would likely take forever, in comparison to pumping it at 8GPM for example. I'd feel much better if ALL the oil was getting filtered to 10 microns, much less 1 micron...

There's two larger 10 micron, 3000 PSI filters at Surplus Center for around $150 that can handle 50 or 60 gpm. Both have visual differential pressure indicators which would indicate a clogging filter. Both have a 50 PSI relief setting.

There's a smaller one that is rated at 12gpm for $80, but it cautions that it is not intended as a total system filter, but rather a final filter protect valves. I wonder if it would handle the 8gpm PT-425 PTO? It, too, has 50 PSI relief setting, but it doesn't mention a visual pressure differential indicator.

JJ, I'm sure you can find a filter to handle that flow rate. that may be less money than all the rest.plus it would work all the time, just hook into the other quick coupler and let it circulate.the pto would stay on all the time...jim

why not just plum one inline at the pto quick coupler on the return side? let the pump do the work. if your not running the mower just hook it up to the coupler turn the pto on let it work........jim
I have done something similar using the following filter:

Surplus Center Item Detail

I chose this filter because it has a bypass indicator and can handle pressure surges. I connected it on the return line of the mower.

You are the first of the group to do this, keep us informed on the outcome.

It would benefit you to take a sample of the hydro fluid now, and compare it to another sample taken a month or two later. There are company's that test oil, for a small fee. I have heard that even new oil needs to be filtered. It is not as clean as you would think. Also, on the bypass pressure indicator if it is a gage, note the pressure now, so you can tell when to replace the filter. I also noted that it is about $34.00 to replace.
I just thought of something else, you could put it inline before the hydraulic motor to give added filtering to all your PTO motors.
