I can easily see how it happened....uncontrolled dogs became a pack, you turned and that triggered the attack instinct given all the noise and excitement, etc...
Jomar, well said. People now days do not grow up around working dogs... hog dogs, cat dogs, varmint hounds, coon dogs, sheep dogs... They have two sides...loveable pets and aggressive killers. I grew up around such dogs... voice control was key. An out of control dog is an incident on a fuse.
I firmly believe any dog, given the right circumstances, can become aggressive. However, certain breeds are at more risk than others....the bulldog being an example.
I hope something is done about that German Shepard ... it's going to be a serious problem otherwise, sooner or later. My advice, which you didn't ask for, is that you never visit your MIL with your kid UNLESS the dog is chained up. It doesn't make for good relations, but then neither does a kid with a dog bite....it has demonstrated it knows how to kill something already....it doesn't take much to rip out a jugular...my border collie did it on coons and other varmints regularly...on command ONLY!!!!! The dog you describe weighs twice as much as mine and only needs a trigger event...the appearance of somebody trying to escape (like a kid running around) and it WILL happen. OK...end of rant...but your comments really sent a chill up my spine realizing the circumstances you described re the out of control dog.
