No, I didn't cut a toe or foot, but a dog ran up behind me and nipped me on the left calf muscle. This was last Tuesday, I was cutting my lawn with a push mower and I noticed the neighbor two houses over come home and pull up in his driveway. His teenage daughter gets out and lets the dogs out of the front door. Well, two of their three dachshunds came running over to the edge of my yard barking at me. Another bigger dog that I didn't know they had came over too, but I didn't really pay it any attention. So, I turned a corner mowing with dogs over to my right and slightly behind me. Unbeknownst to me the bigger dog circles around behind me and nips me in the left calf. I didn't hear him because of the lawn mower running.
The neighbor/father pretty much saw everything, he had gotten out of the driver side and stood watching because the smaller dogs barking at me had gotten his attention. He came over and was apologetic and offered to drive me to the Urgent Care, but I was able to drive myself. No stitches req'd, just disinfecting and dressing, and a tetanus shot cause I couldn't remember when I last had one.
Of course, they filled out a report for DHEC and the county animal control. The next day DHEC called me and said they had made contact with the owner and put the dog in 10 day quarantine, basically house arrest, to observe him for rabies a couple times within that period.
So, now it's healing over nicely and I am waiting on the doctors bill to show up. The neighbor said he would pay whatever the out of pocket is. He says he's getting rid of the dog too, which is supposedly a Catahoula Cur. Looked basically like a pit bull to me though. If I see it in my yard again, I'll get rid of it for him!! Ok, I know I shouldn't do that on my own, but I promise you that dog won't bite me again! He said it got very agitated whenever he ran the vacuum cleaner and he had to put it in the back yard to vacuum the house. He thought the lawn mower probably agitated it that day. Maybe so, but those other dogs barking at me got his attention, which got it all started. I guess I'm lucky... I was wearing short pants and he could really done some damage if he wanted too!!
