No, I didn't cut a toe or foot, but a dog ran up behind me and nipped me on the left calf muscle. This was last Tuesday, I was cutting my lawn with a push mower and I noticed the neighbor two houses over come home and pull up in his driveway. His teenage daughter gets out and lets the dogs out of the front door. Well, two of their three dachshunds came running over to the edge of my yard barking at me. Another bigger dog that I didn't know they had came over too, but I didn't really pay it any attention. So, I turned a corner mowing with dogs over to my right and slightly behind me. Unbeknownst to me the bigger dog circles around behind me and nips me in the left calf. I didn't hear him because of the lawn mower running.

The neighbor/father pretty much saw everything, he had gotten out of the driver side and stood watching because the smaller dogs barking at me had gotten his attention. He came over and was apologetic and offered to drive me to the Urgent Care, but I was able to drive myself. No stitches req'd, just disinfecting and dressing, and a tetanus shot cause I couldn't remember when I last had one.

Of course, they filled out a report for DHEC and the county animal control. The next day DHEC called me and said they had made contact with the owner and put the dog in 10 day quarantine, basically house arrest, to observe him for rabies a couple times within that period.

So, now it's healing over nicely and I am waiting on the doctors bill to show up. The neighbor said he would pay whatever the out of pocket is. He says he's getting rid of the dog too, which is supposedly a Catahoula Cur. Looked basically like a pit bull to me though. If I see it in my yard again, I'll get rid of it for him!! Ok, I know I shouldn't do that on my own, but I promise you that dog won't bite me again! He said it got very agitated whenever he ran the vacuum cleaner and he had to put it in the back yard to vacuum the house. He thought the lawn mower probably agitated it that day. Maybe so, but those other dogs barking at me got his attention, which got it all started. I guess I'm lucky... I was wearing short pants and he could really done some damage if he wanted too!!

His homeowner policy will also cover it if it gets too expensive for him and he balks. Too bad for everyone, having to put the hound down is a drag.

Glad you're healing nicely, and I hope all goes well. I would assume that because of the fact that the DHEC quarantined the dog that the owner could not prove that the dog had the proper shots. I would think the vet the guy used might also supply that info and if he can't you might have reason to be concerned.

Man's best friend? Sometimes I wonder. My cats would not have done this.

The neighbor stated that the dog had JUST HAD HIS shots the day before the incident! The 10 day quarantine is standard here for ANY dogbite. DHEC checks the records of every dog involved in a dog bite (that gets treated by a doctor), and if the dog had not had it's shots, he would have been cited for not being able to produce current records of proof of shots.

Kebo, I have a catahoula and I know exactly what you were up against. I've seen the father of my dog attack a goat one time and it was dead before I could run 200 feet. Davy Crockett had catahoulas. They are very loyal and not afraid of a fight to prove it.

A pitbull has that scissor action bite but his jaw clamps down and stays down (I'm told), but the catahoula can just saw with that same scissor action over and over ... I should say, perhaps, that I have a very close attachment with my dog and she is voice trained. One 'eh' and she'll spin right off. One 'ts ts' and she'll engage. I DO NOT recommend these dogs as pets to just anyone. They are very smart and a bit conniving, too. If I ever showed weakness, she would try to take the ground I lost.

I'm glad to hear the owner is at least acknowledging his part in the whole thing. If he had spent more time with his dog and treated it like the TOOL it really is he wouldn't have to kill a perfectly good animal.

Ok, I wasn't planning on it - but I feel a rant coming on! You know what bugs me?? When people have no control over there animal! What's more, they go out and buy 3 marama's or something, 'cause their so cute, and then wonder what happened when the neighbor gets attacked! My MIL had a german shepherd that was rejected as a police dog because it was too violent. One day it ran down a deer and killed it right in the middle of the park - people, little kids, other dogs all over the place. She can't even get it to settle down, let alone control it, and wants me to feed it treats while it's barking all over my space and looking at me with a crazy stink eye - and she wonders why I won't set my 2 year old down! I don't get it!!

Alright, I'm through.

I don't get it either.. a lot of people that have dangerous dogs that they cannot control are just idiots. That is all I can think of. I am sorry you got bit. I hope it all will work out for you.

Wow ! after seeing that "carnage" I'd say you are luck to have survived that "attack".

You sir are a very brave MAN.
Do you have any dogs yourself?

Can't tell if you are being a bit sarcastic, but like I said the dog could have really made it an ugly bite had it wanted too. Not funny by any means.

To answer your question, I do happen to have a 10yr old red dachshund myself. She's a house dog and is really a sweet and loving pet. To date, she has never bitten anyone, or even gotten aggressive with anyone. That doesn't mean should couldn't bite someone though.
