Bear in mind that operator's manuals are probably written by a tech writer who has never seen a tractor, much less operated one. Somebody probably told them that the fuel lever should be 1/4 to 1/3 open and that's just what they wrote. Nobody explained to them that once the tractor fires, it is no longer "starting" and then you should use your own judgement the same as during any other operation. Pull the throttle back for the desired rpm. Surely the person who wrote those manuals is also the same mentality as the person who decided that our diesel fuel cans needed to be ventless and have a lever with a special lock so that it is nearly impossible to use without spilling fuel onto the ground and getting only a trickle of fuel when you do it according to instructions.

I set my throttle just off the low idle stop. When my engine starts, it jumps up to about 1200 rpm and then drops back to 800 when cold and bounces around a couple of times before settling at 1000 rpm. By my calculations, since full 540 rpm is about 2600, full 1/4 throttle would be 1400 rpm. I don't know about you, but I couldn't reliably set my throttle and get exactly 1400 rpm 1 time out a 1000. I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it either.;):D

Tech writers get thir instructions from the people who design the engines. Cold starting operation is generally developed via development test or from long experience for the engine type design. Manufacturers don't leave this type of information to the whim of a tech writer when they can have strong implications on warranty issues.
Yes there maybe contradictory info in the manuals but that's usually due to a lack of editorial oversight. The OEM still has liability in the case where they give instructions that cause damage to the machine.

What does the term "Wet Stacking" mean in a diesel engine?

"Wet Stacking" happen when a diesel engine operates below the rated output level the engine starts over-fuel or "wet stack". Diesel engines are designed to operate with a load and operate more efficiently in the 70 to 80% range of rated output. When a diesel engine operates for a long period of time below 40% it begins to over fuel. This happens because the injection tips begins to carbonize and disrupt the fuel spray pattern.

How to correct the "wet stacking" if it has occurred.

The only way to correct a diesel engine if it has begun to wet stack is to load the engine for a couple of hours to burn off the excess fuel and clean up the engine. Diesel generator sets with electronically controlled engines or advance emission systems are less likely to wet stack. But all diesel engines will wet stack unfortunately, if operated for long periods of time below rated levels. This is the reason it is important to get the proper size and design of a diesel generator set.

Wow-- you guys made me go get my manual and read the starting section.. L3240 GST bought new in July says to 1/2 the trottle and start?? Never read that before, but I guess its right if the manaul says so:confused2:

Interesting read from a link I found. This is for kubota's but I would think it would apply to any diesel tractor make.

Cold Weather Starting Tips | OrangeTractorTalks

Vic

How can you believe a guy who doesn't even have a ROPS?;)

That's a nice video Vic. I especially like that block heater. I think I'd run the cord to it through the steering wheel so I didn't forget and drive away with it still plugged in.

check this video out About : Cold Starting a Tractor the mechanic recommends half throttle pretty funny. I just don't get why a modern tractor would need Throttle with a high-pressure fuel rail? Take care

hmm... well, guess I'll have to remember all that from the good video...next time it gets to minus 10 around here:D Will be sure and let it warm up so cab will be toasty .... At my normal external starting temp, 40 (pretty cold day) to 100 degrees, I have a hard time sitting at 1500 rpms for very long, I want to get on with the work at hand, thus drive off about a minute after starting.... maybe not ideal, but I'm an anxious type...

This post has me so interested into why people are half throttling their tractors, I went out this morning and made my own starting video 27 F. The tractor has been sitting about a week and most nights have been getting down to 25 to 30ー struck the glow plugs twice throttle all the way down starts right up. Now it was only 27 but she'll do the same thing at -12 just a lot more slamming and banging from the engine :). Check the video out T2420 starting it's in the new video section sorry about the quality cheap camera, when my brother gets back from his trip, I'll do one of the old Massey Ferguson with a shot of starting fluid take care

PS I guess the conversion process takes a long time? So here it is at my photo bucket account

I won't start mine at the idle setting because it starts rougher there. Meaning it might hit on one and miss on the next as it gets going. This seems like a lot more stress on the engine and makes a louder knock as it starts.

Set the throttle at about 1/4 and fire it up. Starts smooth. Then idle it and wait a few seconds before moving off. There is no way I'll idle mine for 5 or 10 minutes before going to work. All that moisture in the exhaust and very limited warming at no load. Just be sensible and don't slam a load to it right off. Drive around a bit and ease into it. Engines do not do well with extended cold idle, and diesels in particular, don't warm up very well without a load.
