Boy, this can get technical, and opinionated....
My M9540 has Kubota's 3rd function. It will lift, curl and 3rd function at the same time, although at reduced speed.
Lift and curl at the same time is very common. My M9540 does it, my Brother's L3240 does it I think the B3200 my Son just bought does it but can't confirm that. So let's not leave this discussion thinking that feature is rare. It's actually very, very common.
As to the OP's 3rd function. You obviously have a "Diverter Valve" setup. Without engaging the 3rd function with it's button you have lift and curl. By engaging the 3rd function with it's button you now have lift and 3rd function. Thus the descriptive name "Diverter". You can only have 2 functions at once. You can become adept at operation by learning to quickly depress/release the button while curling. This will allow you with some limited success to curl and "grip" something.
The 3rd function on my M9540 is different. It utilizes "pressure" beyond the FEL valves. It has two buttons on the joystick, one for "open", one for "close". So,,, I always have lift and curl. When I activate the 3rd function it uses whatever hydraulic flow/pressure is left from the lift/curl function. The hydraulic pump flow rate is high enough that with normal function it powers all three with minimal delay.
