Thinking about upgrading

Last year a dealer around here would have had me in a Grand L3540 HST with a cab if he had made me a reasonable offer on my trade.

The year before that I would have been in a L3540 HST (no cab) if a big brother Kubota regional service manager hadn't poked his long nose into my business and told my purchasing dealer (who sucked) that I was talking to a competitor of his about some warranty work. Of course he didn't know that I was also pricing out the new Grand Ls.

In hindsight, I think both things worked out well. My little L3400 is doing me just fine at 50-60 hrs per year, I don't need much more than it. One day I will get a CAB tractor but at this point it would be a luxury and one I can't really afford given the other billion things I ought to spend money on first!

I don't quite understand why dealers low-ball you on a trade though.

I doubt I could get $28000 for it although the replacement cost is easily that and more with tax. I have it listed now for $23500. I am going to take a "hit" on the price but with the Kubota 0% for 42 months that is available now on new "B" series it makes it tough. Most of the used B cab models are listed around $20,000 but don't include all of the options that mine has. If I can get $22,000 for it I would be happy. I am also waiting on a trade in quote from some local Kubota dealers. If it doesn't sell I will hold onto it.

You could think of it this way, too. You could have taken that money that you paid for that B3030 & invested in the stock market. Then you would have taken a HUGE hit!

Even if you decide not to trade you still have a really nice tractor. I should have said before that I have a larger tractor, an Oliver 77, for those few times when the B3030 is too small. And that's part of what makes the B3030 nice for me. It's a good size for using around my buildings where I wouldn't dare go with the 77 & if I need a bigger tractor the 77 is available as long as I'm not right up against the house with it.

Also, I can run the generator & plow snow at the same time. I know this is an issue for some guys here when discussing PTO generators. I have front mounted snow plows for both tractors & they will both run the generator too. The B3030 is better on the generator though because the governor works better on that one.

Oh, and I also have a little JD LX288 lawn tractor which is handy when my niece &/or nephew help me mow lawn. They sit on the little JD and sweat while I am in the air conditioned B3030! But I also make sure I pay them well too.

It all depends of course on the market. It only makes sense that the dealer will buy low and sell high, he has to make some money to pay the bills. For most people it does not make sense to buy a lightly used tractor.

You are going to take a big hit if you try to sell a nice used low hour tractor. When you do the math and figure in the 0% financing you'll find that you can buy a brand new tractor from the dealer with full warranty for the same monthly payment (and number of payments) as the slightly used tractor financed at a higher rate.

Agreed, I basically stated the same thing earlier. The 0% for 42 months makes a NEW "B" series a better deal in some cases then a used one (depending on the price). But that is the reason I priced my B3030 as low as I did to make it more competative. I think a bigger issue at the moment is the economy, nobody wants to take on any debt. Cars, boats, tractors, etc. are not selling very well right now (even new ones). My local Craigslist has a bunch of Kubotas and tractors in general for sale to.

At this point I will probably be sticking with the B3030 for now. The 26 degree temperature today in Connecticut reminded me how nice the cab will be for snow removal ;)

You're not loosing anything by keeping that tractor. If its anything like mine it's a great little tractor to have around. And i still think your asking price is too low. Start higher. You can always come down. And don't be in a hurry to sell.

He can always add an aftermarket cab down the road, here in new england you need one more often than you realize. Hold out for your price, its not like you are tractorless and a 3030 is a fine machine.

I thought your price looked pretty good until I checked the exchange rate:(, by the time I changed money I might as well buy a new one. I'd like a cab tractor for moving snow but still struggling with whether it would be a plus or not for everything else I use the tractor for. I'm actually thinking that a heat houser might be a good solution, get some heat from the engine without being fully enclosed.

I think your price is very fair. My friend sold his b3030 with cab, blower, back blade, loader for 19000 and I know people kicking them selfs for not jumping on it. I love my cab for heat ,flies, snow.

I'm currently shopping, too, and was quoted $21,700 for a new 3240 w/loader at our local orange/blue dealer - what kind of prices are you seeing there?

Erik, out the door for $19,000. 2008 L3240 w/ 724 SS QA FEL, CC filled R4s, rear work light. 0/0 for 54 months. Cincinnati area. Can probably get you the same deal.

I love everything about this tractor.
