I just bought a Bolens G174 a couple days ago. But I since decided it was too small. So now I'm thinking of selling it and getting something bigger. I found this in Craigslist. What do people think?

FOR SALE IS A FORD/NEW HOLLAND 1710 4X4 TRACTOR WITH LOADER, IT HAS A 27 HP 3 CYLINDER DIESEL ENGINE, 2000 HOURS, POWER STEERING, PTO AND 3 POINT HITCH. IT STARTS, RUN AND WORKS GOOD, THIS IS A GOOD DEAL FOR A 4X4 TRACTOR WITH LOADER.

The only problem I see is that it has turf tires. Can someone tell me the size of the tires so I can start looking for some replacement AG tires. Or if someone could point me in that direction, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

My 1700 has 13.6x16 (R3) Turf tire. The replacement AG rim 11.2x24. I myself had problem both with R3 traction and finding a decent AG rim. you will have traction issue for ground engaging implement but should be okay with the rest. I could not plow real well but a rotary tiller took care of that. How much are they asking for it. I've seen it between $3500 to $4500 for tractor and about $1500 extra for the 770 loader. I think 1710 does have a live PTO which is a positive for finish mowing if you need. It's a good little tractor.

Hes asking $4500. I'll be using it for sugaring. So its going to have to chew through a good bit of snow and mud, so I think AG tires are needed. It looks around $500 for tires and shipping off ebay for the rear and I found some $40 used front tires also. I'm hoping I can sell the Bolens for close to the same amount as this tractor.

Power steering on a 1710 is power assisted steering and can be marginal at best. If you are expecting effortless, one finger steering such as full hydrostatic steering provides, you will be disappointed.

Was this a price for R1's and rims or just tires. You'll need new rims which are quite pricey from New Holland. I ran a 1710 with ags for quite a few years until I upgraded and did a lot of hard work with it. It never had any problems.

Sure it doesn't steer like a Lexus, but it is a tractor after all. I ran one for years with heavy loader use and didn't have any problems.

I found a shop in my area that could make the right rim for Ag tires, can't remember exactly how much but it was more than half of the $1200 tiller I bought. I opted to buy the tiller instead. Your 4x4 should help with the traction.

I have a Ford 1710. The manual I have has the tire sizes listed as follows.

Front:
(AG) 4wd 6.00-16, R1, 4PR 2wd 5.00-15, F2, 4PR
(TURF) 4wd 27-8.50-15, 4PR 2wd 23-8.50-12, 4PR

Rear:
(AG) 2wd & 4wd 11.2X24, R1, 4PR
(Turf) 2wd & 4wd 13.6-16, R3, 4PR

I was told it is very important to keep the ratio between the front tire and rear tire the same as the recommendation. Changing the ratio by putting smaller or larger tires on the front with the 4WD will cause the 4wd front end to wear early.

But your 2120 steers entirely different. Just trying to point out what I believe to be a significant characteristic. The FEL Lexus offers isn't very good.

Actually Rick, I was refering to a 1710 that I had before the 2120. Maybe I was just stronger back then !!!

Yes, I knew you were referring to a 1710 you once had. I thought a comparison of that to the 2120 I also remember you have/had would help make my point. The 10 series power steering generally requires more effort than just about anything with fully hydrostatic steering.

Buts its still a step up from my Bolens which is completely manual steering.

Chris,

I have looked around and searched for a 770 loader for my Ford 1700 to no avail. They will not part with the loader if the tractor runs and have not been able to find a dead 1700 with a loader to salvage. Since you have 4x4 and may be power steering might not be a bad idea to invest in Koyker for 1700. They are good loaders and probably installed will cost you $2600-$3000. 155 size Koyker with 1 3/4" cylinder and Ford mounting bracket in Ford blue should fit the bill.

Depenping on what you are planning on using the FEL for you should take a look at the flow rate of the hyd. pump on the 1700. The FEL will have power but it will be kinda slow. If you are expecting the hyd. to be fast like a skidloader you will be sadly disapointed.

I have a 1985 1710 2wd with a SMC84Q,which Ford dealer was using quite frequently for new tractors of that era. Alamo owns them now,but anyway, I saw one on ebay last week that went for $750.Be patient and you'll find what you want.I was at the right place at the right time and got my setup for $1500.I feel guilty...NOT!!

Welcome to TBN Blue,

I'm glad it worked out for you. What I have is time, if I find a good one will pounce on it. I find my best deals when I'm not looking for it and stumble right on it. I would consider an old loader around $1000 with some repair work but even with beat up loaders people expect to sell for 80% of original value:rolleyes: If I move and build on my acreage a shiny brand new beast with a loader and some bells and whistles is going to be on the agenda:D
