Things that go bump in the night

I rarely ride anymore, but when I do, it is during the day, and for fun.

I have in mind that if I encounter something like you did, I will brake hard, but let off before I encounter the critter. That is a lot of thinking to have to do in a split second, so I may just panic instead, but I at least have a plan.

My bike has anti-lock brakes, so maybe that will help me out sometimes.

Heck..broad daylight is not a sure think sometimes...once I was coming down a back road at about 1 pm, and a herd of dear came spilling down the embankment right in front of me. I suppose something was running them. I had to stop...before they all passed and crossed the road.

Yup bikes are easy to crash no doubt.

The whole neighborhood wants him gone one way or another just gone.

I pray that he hits a rabbit or possum so he gets it out of his system so he doesn't kill one of us...not very Christian like but eye for an eye rings a bell. ;)

Rural areas always have at least one of these persons...We can add to the list his brother who always spins the tires in the blacktop each time he leaves his road??Guess he just loves to here that V-8 straining to breathe?? Been hoping that they grow up to know, better things soon??

You are exactly right EE Bota a lot of split second decisions it is good to have a plan I unfortunately (or not) didn't have one.

I dont even remember it all except I must have pulled the clutch and mashed the rear brake?

Because I do remember hearing the tire squealing and the rear swinging back and forth and my foot hitting the coon. I actually watched it roll my foot around the peg and me thinking I just broke my foot but being thankful to still be upright.

Don't say anything but...(I was the kind of kid and middle aged adult that I want to strangle now. I hate to say it I even tore up and down this same blacktop with my 62 Chevy II with a 6-71 blown small block 23 years ago. Even occasionally lifting the front wheels off the ground so I dont get much sympathy even though I have calmed down. We all do eventually just hope nobody but us gets hurt.)

I've done it before and gotten away with it, but we really should always wear boots and britches when riding. No boat shoes, sandals(gasp), sneakers, or anything without ankle protection. I saw a guy the other day in sandals and shorts on a Heritage...on the highway...man that's just asking for trouble:laughing:

I hit a deer while commuting home on my bike once. I was doing about 65 and hit him in just the right spot, and didn't go down. Did't even stop til I got home 17 miles later. Bruised my left calf and caused extensive cosmetic damage to my FZ1. God was watching out for me. I look for his brother or sister to come out of that same spot every night, now.

Wow you got very lucky glad you made it deer is my big fear!

Course I never thought I would miss seeing a 40lb slow moving coon in the middle of the road either but I did right up to the last few milliseconds.

Yeah, I used to play Dukes of Hazard too, until I ended up repairing the front suspension of my pickup. It turns out they had several General Lees and would use them all up filming a single episode.

Kinda freaks me out a bit when we travel to FLA and see bikers passing us at 70, 75, 80, etc. Wearing shorts, T shirt, flip flops, and maybe a bandanna on their head. Course, I guess at the speed if they wreck it really does not matter what they are wearing.

There is/was a guy on the road behind use who would ride his bike at high speed. I figure he is/was organ donor wanna be with all of the deer around here. Either he or another guy used to do the same on the road in front of us. I have heard him do this at dawn and dusk which is a bad time for the deer. The wifey got her eight point buck with her car during the broad day light so no time is really safe. I have not head the bike in a while so maybe he sold it. :)

Later,
Dan
