i am having a hard time understanding how you can cut the base trim without doing damage to the floor?

If you are installing flooring and need to undercut the door casing and trim, then you are probably working on top of the subfloor so damage isn't an issue. And I wish this tool existed when I installed our floor. I cut every single door casing by hand, laying on my side. That took just as long or longer to do than laying the entire floor itself. Not a fun job!

I've been considering getting one from HF. They have 2 models. The more expensive one is variable speed. Do you guys with variable speed use that feature or do you just run it full blast for everything you do?

Full speed for cutting, slower speed when sanding.

Thanks. I just bought for the variable speed HF model on sale for $60 and used a 20% off coupon to try to lessen my disappointment if it craps out. Time will tell.... The guy running the register REALLY pushed the extended warranty for it and I finally had to say "I don't buy extended warranties period." They don't seem to get it -- if you buy electric tools at HF you are a risk taker to some degree.

Lowes has one in there tool brand , tough force (whatever there brand is called). Bought it right after Thanksgiving and tried the saw and sanding works great..
I paid $59.00 on sale reg price 89.00
It is based off the size of 4 " grinder compared to the Dremel one.
It also comes with a adapter to use Dremel blades.

I am replacing all the trim(baseboard,window/door casing) and flooring in our 1700 sq/ft bungalow. I bought the dremel multi-max. I used it for fine sanding of the window sills that I was extending as well as undercutting door casings for tile and hardwood floors. I killed one and bought another because I already had some extra attachments for it. I would suggest spending more for a FEIN if you are going to use it alot.(which I didn't think I would until I got using it)
My other suggestion is to get a rotozip with the flush cutting attachment if you are going to undercut door jambs for flooring instead of using one of these multi-tools. It is MUCH quicker and much SMOOTHER/STRAIGHTER...my 2 cents

HF has both on sale thru Tuesday.. the non-variable is $25 and the variable is $50 - NO additional coupons are allowed (and I tried to use my 20% coupon)

I decided to try the variable speed one - although at $50 I wonder if will be worth it when the Bosch is on sale at lowes for about $90 right now

I have the Dremel version that cost $99 at Lowes. It's become one of my favorite tools. I used it yesterday to install a backsplash. The window sill was just a little tight for the tile, so I trimed it in place with the wood cutting blade.

I have the Ridgid lithium battery. Lifetime warranty still applies. Good life out of the batteries except when sanding when they last about 12 minutes.

The Rockwell apparently has switch issues. Mine was one of the lemons and the switch broke after about four months. Five months into a warranty repair and I still don't have it back.
