Let's face it: You pretty much have to suspend thoughts of reality to enjoy any movie. Some just make you do that better than others.

Once "Battleship" gets you to accept the idea that we are invaded by aliens, then the idea that you could take USS Missouri out of mothballs and use it to fight the aliens becomes easy to accept.

As I get older, I have a harder time accepting the ridiculously portrayed shooting skills and fighting techniques in old westerns.

I believe it was a Clint Eastwood movie where a bad guy is attempting to intimidate Clint. He does a quick draw and fires a "warning" shot that hits about an inch from Clint's head.

Clint barely even responds. He is somehow clairvoyant enough to know that the bad guy wasn't really trying to kill him, and the bad guy has supernatural speed accuracy with a six-shooter.

As a child, I would just accept that. As an adult, I find it too silly to watch.

One thing I've noticed about both music and movies, is that your enjoyment of them is highly dependent on your age and perspective at the time you first saw them. It's why old people prefer movies and actors that their kids fail to appreciate.

Regarding John Wayne, I think he's a great man who did many great things for both the industry and those in his circle, but his acting style is too old and hackneyed for this child of the 1970's to appreciate. The Clint movies may be every bit as ridiculous in premise, probably even moreso, but they're more "of my time".
On the flip side, I recently rewatched the three Naked Gun movies, and I laughed my a$$ off. Maybe there's no accounting for taste. :)

now that was one of the best movies ever
as a long time boater and some one who has dropped an anchor or two, the
finale where the battleship skids around on the anchor chain is so ridiculous it utterly defies physics.
Ah Hollywood....
Not like Independence Day was particularly believable either but still great fun.

It's called clubhauling, and was actually a commonly-used method on old sailing ships in battle. I can't imagine it working on a 20th century battleship, though. Too much mass and too much horsepower involved, a whole different scale of operation.

Also, Iowa class battleships are exceptionally long and narrow, even by the standard of other 20th century ships, and especially by comparison to the boats where this method was successfully used. They're designed to go very fast, in a straight line... not exactly a cork that you can spin around a fixed point, quickly or easily. So I agree with you, in the case of the movie Battleship, it's unlikely clubhauling could work very well on that class of ship.

Oh, and any of you guys who've managed to not see Tom Hanks' Greyhound already, you're missing one of the best WW2 Naval movies ever made. Definitely one of my favorite new movies of the last 10 years.
