Tragic.

As a kid, I remember a classmate's father getting killed instantly in a car accident. I then was asked to be an alter server for his funeral a few days later. Kinda surreal. It was a Catholic school. Our whole class attended the funeral in our school uniforms, and she was sitting there in funeral clothes with her family.

Just something you don't forget.

My Wife's good friend lost both parents in an auto accident years ago. I can't imagine the loss and the shock it must have been.

Since we're talking about tragedies... a HS classmate's parents were vacationing out west when the RV park was vacated because of flash flood warnings. They stopped at a phone booth and his mother called home to let him know what was going on. Suddenly he heard her scream and the phone went dead. What a thing for a kid to go through.

Been there several times... makes a lasting impression.

We no longer have alter servers so sometime in the future serving will be just a memory.

I've been fortunate to have both parents and all siblings at my age.

I served a lot of funerals as a kid. Never forget a graveside burial... knee deep in snow, parka over a cassock. The best part was being fed by the Altar Society afterwards.

I distinctly remember serving my first funeral. Riding to the cemetery in the lead limo with the other altar boy, the priest, and a couple of the funeral home guys, the priest points to the car in front of us and notices it's a custom vanity plate....

continues to be rocked by the priest sex abuse scandals?

Turns out several of the names on the list we recognize...

A priest that had rumors going around the parish about him when I was youngun is on the Fort Wayne/South Bend “out“ list.

Last I knew there was like 23 priests on the list. I forget what they call it but it’s not a pretty list.

I think the Catholic Church lost more members over that than any other issue going on
