I wonder if someone here can find this footage on YouTube, but I remember there was an interview being given of one of the Mercury program astronauts on the day of the test launch just immediately prior to his own launch. The rocket blew up on the pad, and the reporter was pressing the astronaut on, "are you really sure you want a ride on one of those things?" The astronaut replied something like, "three months ago, half of the were blowing up on the pad, and now we're down to just one-third. I feel pretty good about it."

Serious brass cajones. Wish I could remember which pilot it was, now.

My cousin was a welder in his younger days and was pretty good at it. The shop he worked at got a contract to do some work for the space shuttle. Every morning he would light up before work, and used to tell about how being "buzzed" helped hom focus on his work.

I used to use the same logic about driving with a beer between my legs... until I lost my license for operating under the influence.

Valid point, although it was actually an o-ring which failed because of extreme cold. I am sure that everything for the shuttle was xrayed and checked thoroughly. I also don't know that he was "high" when welding for that project.
