Yep… dad gave it to the TV man when he bought a Zenith Color console with space command.
I wouldn't have needed to cheat, I watch Leave it to Beaver reruns while eating breakfast.
My dad was a hold out, we had a B&W TV until they stopped selling them at the store. Not that TVs went bad that often, but he was not the type to buy anything if what we had worked. Same thing with 3 on the tree, all the vehicles he bought had those until they stopped offering them.
My great-grandparents (born 1890 - 1895) lived just up the road from me well through the 1980's, and had a TV just like that, that I'd watch growing up. The tuner and picture were actually fine, but signal reception where they lived was beyond terrible, given they never bothered with any antenna larger than the rabit ears set on the table behind the set.
I went in a store in the 1990s that had a brand new in the box Philco Predicta. The store was like a museum, full of stuff new old stock for sale. $600 I could have bought it for. At the time I started collecting tube radios from the 40s-50s and bought new ones he had as well as transistor 60s ones.
Whenever my dog starts barking for no apparent reason, I get all serious and say, "What is it? Is Timmy stuck in a well?"
