You're too kind. It was -16 when it started malfunctioning. We currently have an extra vehicle, so I just parked it. But I wanted to go ice fishing this weekend coming up, so I took advantage of the warm day last weekend and opened the hood. Had I done that on the -16 day, I would have tackled the issue immediately. Anyhow, I also changed the cap and rotor as it was misfiring on two cylinders occasionally. Runs like a champ now.... a 20 year old rusty champ with 95K miles, but a champ none the less. :)

I have gotten much better at cold starting the Deutz in my 1460. I still have not wired in the glow plugs, but I have started it in the single digits, probably about 8 degrees. I put the throttle up about 1/2 way, and just keep cranking it. Takes about 30-60 seconds, and smokes like you wouldn't believe, but takes off. The starter on the Deutz has no trouble driving the cold pumps.

I think that below zero I would need the glow plugs though.

I think you'd benefit from the glow plugs even at current temps. I used to transport military vehicles out of factories cross-country to rail spurs for shipment. Many had glow plugs. Made a huge difference in starting time. Probably saves wear and tear on the starter over time, too.
