Those artists songs for some reason seem to stay w/one thru out the years.
Heck I been know to sing a couple of those tunes myself...ahh maybe thats why the cows always ran to the barn at night time...now that I think about my singing talents I'm cross between a coyote in heat and a Chinese auctioner, /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gifbut who doesn't sing a tune or two while on there tractor.
Yep today C/W missing some of that homeie counrty feelings, but ever now and than someone comes a long..John Denver{Country Roads}Sawyer Brown{I'll take the dirt roads} etc....

Hank Williams...what can one say about the man,for in the short time he was w/us he open more doors and touch people inner feelings..such as songs like Your Cheatin Heart&So Low Some I Could Cry etc...
Oh geeze if I keep going on you figure out my age. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Okay this one I still could never understand...Elvis name the king...give me a break!!/w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif
Who said or did they vote on Elvis being name the king...I would like to know this answer or a recount on the votes, for I think someone forgot about Hank Williams and Chet Atkins.

Okay here and easy triva.
Name the actor who related to C/W singer Tex Ritter. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Thomas, now you're starting to talk about the singers I liked best. I have a few Jim Reeves albums, and Johnny Horton's North to Alaska album, a few Marty Robbins albums, a few Sons of the Pioneers, a few Statler Brothers, and a bunch of others. But my favorite music is the old fashioned Southern Gospel male quartets (with good strong bass singers), like the Oak Ridge Boys (40 years ago), the Statesmen, Blackwoods, Cathedrals, Florida Boys, Stamps, etc.

And can John Ritter sing? Have never heard him try to sing; only act? Too bad he didn't inherit daddy's voice.

Have you seen that new Merle Haggard video. Motorcycle Cowboy

Okay, how about this one. Which four stars made up the so called "million dollar quartet"?

Hint; we've mentioned three of them so far.

Bird,
For the life of me I can't remember Tex Ritter band name, was it the Texas Playboys and didn't they pick another band name later on??

Can't say I heard of John Ritter sing before, but Gene the singing cowboy son who play Bubba on the Heat of the Night tv show wasn't have bad w/ a tune.

Has it been 40 years already /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif ole man where my...ahh Ted Mack Amateur Hour use to advertise that brown bottle about 40 years ago on Sunday night...and ain't to grow hair. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Thats for sure about base singers, and most of the bass singer were little in height compare to six foot plus bass singers, sure could catch one attendion when they hit the low notes.

Hope the tilling going well..11 above and 30 to 40mph winds here and don't dare to look at the windchill....brrrr.

I'm not familiar with the country music being played these days. My Dad was a local country musican and singer back in the 50's and 60's, even into the 70's. He gave me my first name from Ernest Tubb, middle name from Eddie Arnold. Surprised He didn't slip a Hank in somewhere.
How can you people talk about J. Cash and guitar players without mentioning Luther. " Luther played the boogie in the strangest kind of way" It was luther who originated that beat you hear in "I walk the line" and other Cash songs of that period.

Hmm, I've seen them all sizes, but don't remember short ones outnumbering tall ones. J. D. Sumner, who died last year, used to sing with the Blackwoods, then the Stamps after Blackwood bought them, and was singing with Elvis when Elvis died, was well over 6' and as far as I know is still the Guiness Book of Records "lowest bass singer in the world." "Big John" Hall, who was bass for the Stamps Quartet 40+ years ago came by his nickname honestly, and "Big Chief" Weatherington, who was bass for the Statesmen was at least as tall as anyone in the quartet.

And I think you're right about Tex Ritter's band, but don't remember for sure.

ErnieB, my memory's fading in my old age, but I thought Bob Wills' band was the Texas Doughboys.

Bird

/ The Man in black #32
Bird so is mine. I think that originally when the band played on the radio, it was sponsored by a bread co. or flour co. and used the name "light crust doughboys". Later I think they changed names to " The Texas Playboys". Does this sound familiar? I'm not sure myself.

That's what I was thinking about; the Pilsbury Light Crust Doughboys. And you're probably right about the change later, too. I just don't remember for sure.

Well, according to http://www.turkeytexas.com/Bwmuseum.htm, you're right.

Bird, I went and looked it up, cuz I knew it would be on my mind until I did. Wills was a member of The Light Crust Doughboys, He left them in 33 and formed The Texas Playboys. Way before my time but I recall my Dad and his musician buddies talking about it.
Speaking of my Dad and his buddies, a funny story comes to mind. A popular hangout for South Texas country musicans in the late 50's and early 60's was a small bar/dancehall named The Mugwump. They often gathered there on Sunday afternoons, and took turns "sitting in" on Jam sessions. A young fella named Willie Nelson, who fancied himself a songwriter, took to hanging out there. One Sunday, he told them he was working on a new song, and wanted them to hear it and tell him what they thought of it. He climbed up into the bandstand and sang his song.
When he was done the other musicians told him, it was the dumbest song they had ever heard. He was also told to leave the bandstand, and never get in it again. Several suggested he should look for a new occupation. The song Willie sang was "Hello Walls"
Dad always got a kick out of telling this story, and how for the rest of the evening they laughed and mocked the song saying " Hello table", "Hello chair" "hello beer bottle", and hello to anything else they saw. I think it was Ferlin Husky who recorded it, and gave Willie the last laugh.

ERNIEB,
Like they say you never know..great story.

Refresh my memory...wasn't Ferlin Huskey also known as the singing sheriff?

Thomas,

Sorry buddy, the Ol' Possum it wasn't.

The four were John Cash, Carl Perkins, Elvis, and.....

Jerry Lee Lewis /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Lots of great artist come out of Texas for sure. Rocker Steve Earle grew up down there. A town called Shertz. I hear its northeast of San Antonio. Hey, that's where ErnieB is. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Oh I like good fiddle music. Stuff like the CDB more than bluegrass.

BTW, That Merle Haggard video is a music video. Can be seen on CMT.

How about one more. Do you know what happened to Roy Orbison's first wife?

ErnieB, that's a good story; hadn't heard that one. And I did like Ferlin Husky's singing (Thomas, you're right; he was known as the singing sheriff). And I liked "Hello Walls" and thought Jim Reeves recorded it, too, but I just looked through my albums and didn't find it (I told you my memory's fading). Of course, I do have Sheb Wooley's version, as Ben Colder, and it's pretty good, too./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
