Is there a need for wood chips in your area? Instead of burning maybe someone will chip them up for you. My buddy has several tree shears and a few track mounted chippers. They get good money for the chips at the local power company (they burn them).

The tree service guys around here give the chips away. I don't know if it would be worthwhile renting a chipper. At this point it seems like it would be just another of many expenses, but I've also learned to back up and look at things from many different angles. No telling what good ideas may come up here during this project.

One of the track mounted ones could easily and quickly make that pile go away. These things have a large grapple arm and feed the hopper. You might want to see if a company like Aspenlund (spelling) is in the area. They bid work with power companys to build access roads and they usually sub-contract companys to do the work, but because they have to hurry up and wait on a lot of projects these companys are looking for some side work for the weekends. My friend has done similar work all along the eastern coast. It's worth a shot.

Cityboy I am assuming the $ 500 to $600 for burning is for the whole job and not a per acre basis. Forest fuels reduction is what I do for a living. Pile burning of this material is the most economical treatment when no co-gen power plants exist in the area.

After some rainy days, its time for some more progress. My contractor brought out the excavator today.

This machine can really rip the stumps. the skill of the operator was awesome. He was popping those roots so fast it was hard for me to get a shot of the root still in the bucket before he dropped it and popped another. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a new respect for the humble Southern Loblolly pine now. Look at the size of these tap roots! Most of these were pulpwood stumps.

Also take note of how clean the roots are. These guys are doing a good job of making my burn piles as free of dirt as possible.

The loader operator is the equipment owner. He has the stump popping technique down too. Here is a shot of him dressing up an existing windrow and shaking the dirt out.

The loader operator pops the stumps and then shakes them around to knock the dirt loose. This is pretty amazing to watch.

I will pull some of the hardwoood out of this pile for firewood. Got a pretty good sized wood pile going already.

Another day or two and I'll be getting some serious seat time. I'll be building between 5 and 6 acres of horse pasture and fencing it in.

Its really looking good out there. Those guys are doing a good job with the clearing. Hopefully the heat will die down some so you don't bake your brain putting in all those fence posts!
