On the 4110 I looked at, there is a knob under the seat
which the sales lady said allowed you to turn down the
amount of fluid running through the system. So, for
instance, if you had it turned low, the FEL would lower
more slowly?

When would you use this feature? Do I have the idea right?

I believe it's to control the rate of drop on the 3 point hitch. If you close it all the way, the hitch won't drop at all.

With my limited experience, it's kind of difficult to set the
drop rate of the 3 point hitch without an implement or
other load on the hitch. Before I got a loader, I used
a boom pole to set logs on my sawmill and I really liked
how I could "fine tune" the drop rate so I wouldn't wipe
out the mill.

Everybody is correct. For example if you had a really heavy object you would want to screw the knob in to restrict the 3 pt. flow a little so it would not drop as fast as if it were set wide open. Kind of a safety thing too so your implement does not drop really fast.

Well not EVERYBODY... The Saleslady seemed to think it would slow down the FEL...

Hambone and roy that is. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Almost everybody!

Oh one more thing don't close the valve all the way and try to operate the 3 point. Also don't close the valve completely and think it will hold the implement up in the air if you wish to work on it. Use blocks or stands too.

Yellowsocks is right, which makes everybody on this board right. Unless, of course, the saleslady is surfing this discussion right now...

You know, to be honest, it might not have been her
fault. I was talking about the FEL and its operation
and she mentioned the knob and talked about hydraulics
and in the end, she may have known what she was talking
about and I just misinterpreted.

In any case, it's all clear to me know (Well, the bit about
the knob, that is.)

We're just having a little fun with the Saleslady thing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I was first shown how to operate the rate drop control knob on a CUT, the mechanic (who was doubling as delivery guy) rightfully pointed out that the rate of drop is as much a safety issue, as it was a production/convenience issue. Yellowsocks safety advice really is dead-center. The mechanic also told me that the first thing he does after hitching up an attachment is to set the drop rate to match the weight of the implement. His advice was to set it first at a drop rate that was a little slower than what you might use once you begin work, then open it up with little tweaks as you go along. It seems lots of people forget this and drop it too fast and/or too early on their first pass. Bad things might happen when this occurs. Also, remember to tighten up the rate drop valve if you are in transport. A hastily dumped 450-pound box blade makes quite an anchor at 8 MPH. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Thank you so very much for the help. I don't know these things. I grew up on 1960 International tractors and am clueless. I really appreciate it.

I am glad you got the information you needed, especially about something like the drop-rate knob, which many people are not familiar with.

That said, you did bump a 21 year old thread and I have to give you a ribbing for it.

🤣
