The Incredible Shrinking Package

What is a newspaper? ..

It's like 'bundling' the ads into a flat bread sandwich, though usually delivered with more filling in it than wrapper.

If you don't subscribe, they'll toss the ads onto your driveway twice a week anyway.

"Ad supported" no longer means 'free'. AOL charged $25/month 20 years ago to show more ads than the 'free' Blue Light & Net Zero did.

Not everyone want to pay to see ads, so newspapers are tak9ng it on the chin.

That is why we don't have foxtel, full of ads plus they dictate viewing times.

Last week my wife went to Sam's Club and bought a house brand sea salt grinder and I was amazed to see that it is now in a glass 14.9 oz. bottle, compared to the 5.5 oz. plastic bottle they went to a few years ago. Maybe things are changing but I doubt it.

The big question is... "Did it cost three times as much" ?

The big discount stores usually buy what they can for the lowest price, slap on their labels, and usually the big sizes are more for the family.
I like shopping at Costco, but a lot of their product is for a family not for just me and the wife. We have to watch the size of thing if it is perishable , so BIG is not always the best thing... we need a good price for what is being sold.

I asked her and she said that she's pretty sure it's less, so win-win. Salt doesn't go bad so no worries about shelf life.

I swear I'll never understand prices. On the 20th, I bought 2 x 4 x 8s for $2.74 (before discount, $2.80 or so). Today they were close to $3.50, shelf price. The 4 x 4 x 16 I bought today was slightly more than the one I got at the end of January, but not by quite that much.

On the other hand, I got strawberries today for .99/lb that are the same brand from the same packer in FL as I got last week for $2.50/lb

Yeah, I know, produce isn't lumber.

Then there are the hex driver bits. I can find 1/4" drivers for about $1.50 or more each, sometimes over $2.00 while I can buy a whole set of 9 different sizes for $3.50 or so.

Years back, I got some 'multi-purpose' wire to use as guy wire and tie downs for lower stress loads around the property. Guyed a couple of small light posts, tied up some bushes, etc. It's a stranded, galvanized wire that holds up well for what I was doing. Had several coils, but have now run out, so I went to get some more. Found it at the same store, same 20G, same 100', but now 4 strand instead of 6 strand and priced a couple of bucks higher. I don't have any of the old packages, so I don't know if they rate it for the same loading or not.

Saw ketchup today. $1 for a small bottle and $3.50 for a bigger one. The unit pricing on the shelf tag showed 4.2 cents per ounce for the little one and 4.5 cents per ounce for the bigger one.

For confusion check the formula for 2 cycle oil mixing on the containers.
Ounces per US gal is the basic formula,

OK
Is that Cdn or US gal but Can sells gas in liters.
Ounce or liter or CC's. or quarts.

Heck U have to have a calculator in hand to mix your chainsaw oil.

No wonder some folks are buying premixed chainsaw fuel.

That’s what she said.

Most people do not check cost per unit. My fiancé is one of them. I have been doing it all my life...keeps the brain active and can save a few pennies here and there.

Occasionally, the smaller package is less than the "economy size"!! Go figure....but most do not.
Same issue here with a 75 year old woman!
She does not even look at the package weight or volume, or cost per ounce.
Actually....she is incapable of mathematically calculating an approximate cost/volume/weight comparison.
A situation, that I long ago gave up on trying to correct.

My dad has always done it and I do it to. He used to stand in the grocery store isle and calculate it. Most of the stores have the price per unit on the tags now.

Imho, in the last 20-30 years, food and eating have become far far more important than when I grew up. We didn't have any money so maybe that's why. A bizzare twist that was I was on the leading edge of the obesity epidemic, 16 years old, 5 ft 9, 280 lbs, 1968. Obesity was not quite in vogue then.

Seems to me, tv has way more than enough cooking shows and the like. Of course, just look at the population. 75% over weight, approaching 50% obesity and......I just started a book called **** Deus, written by the guy who wrote Sapiens. The author points out that currently, more people die from obesity than famine, worldwide. More people die from sugar than gunshots.

I spent some time in western europe and noticed it's common for people, mostly women, to go to the market on a daily basis for tonites meal. That's a daily routine. My retired buddy in Portland does it.

Now....what's for dinner becomes a full time job. It gives a person something to do, something to plan for, a way to burn time with very little stress involved.

I know smaller packaging keeps the price down but I wonder if this daily shopping trip has something to do with smaller sizes?

I don't care but, not for me.

It could be a long wait since there is no Scott Paper Company anymore!

It was bought and became Kimberly-Clark back in 1995...

Just saying.

Just saw stuff yesterday. I read how "apparently" chemicals in masks shrink mens penises and cause infertility in women. THAT would be priceless! Thought maybe this was about that.
