The Heat Is on !!

You know, I am finally understanding what a "dry heat" is. We've been having 102F to 108F highs, and I've been out in it a lot, and I can tell you - I've been hotter. We are experiencing an unusual lack of moisture, but I guess that is leading to very low humidity levels. It's still hot, but it's not that smothering feeling I've felt before.
Yup - it's been nowhere near that hot here - today's high was supposed to be in the mid-80's - it ended up hitting 90 though.

I was out in it all day - I wasn't really all that bad - very little obvious sweating, except for where my hat touched my head.

We have been over 100 for the past week or so. The weather says we have a 40% chance of rain tonight. If it rains it wil be the first we have had in a long time.

Thanks for the reach-out and thoughts, Triple R and others.

The High Park fire within a few miles of our home is about 85% contained, and is "yesterday's news" as far as most of the country is concerned. For those affected by it (over 250 homes burned and over 125 square miles!), it's good to send out some prayers. Thankfully, we had a couple cloudbursts in the past few days that allowed them to get on top of this fire. However, those same storms put some lightning over by Boulder, and started a fire there right near the city... they got on top of that one quickly.

"Today's news" is the Waldo Fire, down near Colorado Springs. While a lot smaller in total area than the High Park fire, it went right through some neighborhoods on the edge of the city (the woodland/urban edge). Over 350 homes. President Obama will be there today. I was impressed to hear that they called ahead, to make sure their arrival would not disrupt the fire efforts (i.e. for police escort, etc.) Our governor assured him it was welcome. Also welcome are the Federal disaster dollars to help this. For us here in Colorado, this is the type of natural disaster we get (sometimes not naturally caused, but most of the recent ones have been lightning); in the southeast, it's hurricanes, in midwest, tornadoes, some places it's floods (flash floods here too). For us, it's wildfires. Temps have been hovering around 100 F for several weeks, with humidity dropping to the single digits at the height of each day.

Thanks to all for prayers and support.
-Mitch

Wow, single digits in humidity - we don't get that low even when it is very cold here. It was hot here by our standards, but it was only 90.

Power is still off for some, little town named Grottoes Va. is still without power and have now run out of water. Has to suck during 100 degree days.

It was 109 friday, 106 Saturday, 105 yesterday. No rain to speak of in 8-10 weeks. If it doesn't rain this week I think some of the crops will be severely damaged,it will not help much even if it does rain.

We have been blessed with low humidity. Last Friday we headed south to GA to get the kids to the grandparents in FLA. I told the wifey we needed to just keep heading SOUTH. It was 105-107 at home but 90/91 at my parents! Who ever heard of going SOUTH for COOLER weather? :confused3::laughing::laughing::laughing:

We were in Savannah last summer and stopped at the 8th Air Force Museum early in the morning. It was HOT outside because of the humidity. This trip, while the temps were around 100, it was not so bad because of the low humidity.

I went outside after work to try to my. Dead battery on the DR which was not unexpected since it is 4-5 years old. The temperature was still in the 90s but the humidity was low and it was not bad at all.

Now that we have had a couple blasts of heat I am done with summer! :D

Later,
Dan

Had 2 inches of rain Tues. at farm located in Southern Ky. I hope the soybeans that were planted 2 weeks ago get the urge to sprout. Unfortunately I have not been that lucky at my house in middle Tn., 103 today no rain in sight.
