Had a kid who worked for me a few years back who was from Texas. He and his buddies were out in his first car(Honda Civic) bombing down a highway one evening when they were sideswiped by a Javelina... A really big one. It hit right in front of the drivers door and totaled the car.

The picture is amazing, but after reading a few versions of the story, it's not what it appears.

I belive the pictures are real and the hog is really that big, but the fact that the kid shot it on a 2,500 acre hunting preserve with guides backing him up with rifles tells me that the hog was pen raised. I don't know the details, but it's common enough for domestic hogs to get close to that size, maybe bigger, on high protein diets.

Just guessing, based on having hunted around the world and on a few game ranches here in Texas, the hog was probably singled out as a potential monster at a young age. He was put into a small pasture and protected from other animals and hunters until her grew to such a size that they were able to sell him to a client for an amount to make it worthwhile.

I don't have a clue what it cost, but when I was in New Zealand hunting at Glenroy Lodge, the owner got a call from another outfitter who had the new world record Red Stag on his place. He said he's let it go for $300,000. A few months later it was in the hunting magazines that somebody had shot it and it was the new world record.

Good or bad, thats how allot of those really freakishly large animals get that big. The good side is they are always bread to others to pass on there genes just like horses and other domestic animals are bred to continue the bloodline. The bad is it's just to feed somebodies ego and let them buy there way into the record books.

Eddie, like you I noticed it was taken off of a game ranch, guided hunt, rifle backup, kid with pistol:eek:.... I suspected it was known to be there and the actual target of this particular hunt.. hadn't thought it thru the way you had.. . lilely, however, it was protected/fed/bred as you say until it fetched a good price.

Years ago, I got two pigs from a friend. After only 1-1/2 years the male was 735 lbs and the female was 540 lbs. I had a large feeder that held several hundered pounds. Those pigs ran through so much feed it was crazy.

When I had them butchered, the only meat that was really good was the chops. I remember the bacon was pitiful (almost no lean).

Most expensive meat I have every eaten.

Frank, everything has changed so much since I was a kid that I don't even know at what age and weight hogs are normally butchered now. But when I was a kid, the first hog I showed in the "Fat Stock Show" (meat animals only) weighed an even 300 pounds which was the maximum weight allowed for the "heavy weight" class. In other words, about 1950, no one wanted a hog bigger than that for meat.

210-240# was top dollar when we raised hogs app. 15 years ago. For our personal consumption we'd get them up to about 280-300. Over that was waste. The 280-300 had bigger hams by far (market preference was smaller hams) and a somewhat bigger loin, and the belly (bacon) had not yet started to get too fatty. We did once slaughter one closer to 400# out of necessity, and there was a tremendous amount of trim.

An associate of mine once owned a boar that the vet estimated at 800#. Had to get rid of him eventually, as he could not be contained adequately for needed vet work on his tusks every few months. For those of you not experienced with hogs I can assure you that a 150# pig can run right over the NFL's toughest linebacker. I am a big guy (6', 240 in my prime) and once they hit about 70-80# I could not physically handle them alone anymore. Strong, strong-willed, and very, very intelligent. Oh yes...and very, very fast...both in quickness and straight line running. They will surprise you.
