Scalp what? Aerate what?
hugs, Brandi
I think we have different ideas on what scalping means. To me, it is when the mower takes the top off of an old fire ant mound and cuts the grass away enough to just see dirt. Also, mowing with the mowers gauge wheels too high and the deck digs in on one side in a fast turn. Or cutting donuts with the zero turn Hustler.

Ha! Yes - just a little different, but I'll admit that I sometimes deploy the "fire ant scalp" as well, usually unintentionally. The term scalp is just a really clean, short cut for the first mow of the season. Helps cut off dead/dormant blades and and allows sun to get to new growth. Also makes aerating more productive. We usually mow our St Augustine at 4" in the heat of summer to give it a fighting chance of staying alive if there is not much rain. Looking at it this way, a cut of 1-2 inches is effectively a scalping. We also rake up the dead thatch that gets dislodged during this process and add that to compost pile.

I had to make sure I wasn't crazy and did find lots of others doing it too. I think the risk of a hard freeze has passed now, so the clock is ticking on this one.

Maybe, maybe not. Good luck with that. I know we suppose to have a mild winter, because of the less than abundant acorn crop. But I'm not gonna hold my breath.

I think your acorns are smarter than mine. I had a pretty good crop, enough that they would roll when I walk on them. I fell three times this year from those acorns. We still had a mild winter.
I have been out there kicking them. Hopefully, I kicked some sense into them.

You think maybe they are tripping me as pay back?

I think my live oak produced more acorns in 2015 than any year in the last 10. And now the Bradford Pear trees are blooming.

Our apple trees are in bloom,, but not the pecan yet,, I don't know how many acorns hit the ground because of all the wild hogs.. I did hear someone say that a blind one found one..
All I know for sure,, it was a wet winter.. with mostly a normal temperature.. except for a couple of Mondays and one Friday..
If it ever dries a bit I will be mowing my pastures.. smile it Tuesday.. Lou

Don't remember the website I saw it on but it showed our average last day of frost is March 11. I'm a hundred miles north of Houston so take that with a grain of salt.
