If you think about it, there really isn't much difference between over head welding, and flat welding.
It's when you have to stand on one foot, on the top step of an 8-feet step ladder and reach as far as you can to make an over head weld is when it gets interesting.

Your thinker is different than my thinker,,,,,,, or maybe it has something to do with skill level.

If you're gonna go and think about it, most people would conclude that it can't be done at all. I think it has similarities to welding thin material except less fun.

A couple of things... It should be "WE" got an A and since he's a newbie, it's not overhead welding, it's upside down welding.:D

Before Keith got going on over head welding I told him two important things to remember.
First, get as comfortable as possible, there will be plenty of times in future that you just can't!
Second, get past the fear of getting burned right now, guess what you're gonna get burned, your playing with fire:laughing:. Then I pulled the sleeves of my coveralls up and showed him all the scars on my arms.

Keith came back this morning to do some more practicing. Started him off on some vertical up with 7018. He had a hard time with it. Then he worked on his horizontal, and over head welding with 7018.
Had him run a horizontal, and over head V-butt weld on 1/2" thick plate. Then we did side bends on both.
First picture is his best vertical up weld with 7018.
