I finally did it. I went to a local dealer, and tested a 2011 F450 chassis, with the new Diesel. This was the bare bones Steel wheel, vinyl XL package. It had the extra Heavy duty alternator, snowplow package, and 4:10 gears. The truck is super quiet, and got quieter as it warmed up. The trailer brake was idiot proof. All in all a smooth truck. The MPG for this truck with the 4:10 gears is about 16, and he says it is a "real number", no games. The MSRP is $49,240. He started off at $46,654, and says there are $3500 worth of rebates, including the customer loyalty. So now I am down to $43,154. I did not haggle, since I have to get authorization from higher headquarters, and I don't see the point until I have them look at my old truck. I asked about the Urea, and he says that a 5 gallon tank full is good for two oil changes. The power train is 100,000 miles, or six years. Bumper to bumper is 3-36k. I figure a flat bed, and gooseneck hitch will run $4000-$4500. If I can get him down to $40,000 for the truck, including rebates, and get $10,000 for my 2004 F250 crew-cab V10, I just might do it. The only thing is the insurance. I am worried that because it is a chassis cab, it might be a lot higher. Any advice on the haggling would be welcome.

I would see if he will also give you some DEF fluid for free to sweeten the pot the DEF is not cheap about $4.00 a gallon good luck in your dealing.

The first tank after the initial fill up is included. Just take it back to the dealer. They gave my friend a certificate to get it filled at any Ford Dealer.

Also the DEF is not that expensive. I have it at my local Pilot Flying J truck stop in the pump. Its $2.59 per gallon today when I filled up just 1 hour ago.

Pilot Flying J - #446 Daleville, IN

Almost every truck stop now has it in the pump that I go to. Big trucks are running it also so its becoming way more common.

I think you'll be able to get them down to $40G. It seems most buyers of these new fords are getting 9-10 grand off MSRP, sometimes that includes any rebates. As far as the DEF goes, one tank for 2 oil changes is a bit of a stretch, one tank full to one oil change yes. Thats 7 to 10,000 miles. I have an F-250 with the new 6.7 powerstroke. Awesome truck so far.

Check out this site for a lot of good info on these trucks.

DEF should be $199. 00 or less for a 55 gallon drum . Better idea look a NAVSTAR Terrastar. No need for def

This all truck from Navistar is a real workhorse.

At 16,000# to 19,500# Gross Vehicle Weight with a powerful MaxxForce 7 300HP Diesel Engine and Allison 1000RDS Transmission this truck is sure to perform….

Thanks for the feedback. I got the go ahead to buy a truck, but not this truck. Wifey wants me to stick to a regular Pick up IE F350 dually etc. I also have to wait till I pay off the kubota, about a year. She is still afraid of the economy. Oh yeah, the deal is she gets to pick the color. She picked purple for my 99 F250 crewcab.:(

$43K is about what we pay for a 'fleet' vehicle, so that was a very good price he gave you.

i was going to say $42,500 plus the flatbed.i have a friend that uses an f450 to pull 32ft goosemecks flatbeds an cattle trailers.an he likes them because they will outlast 3 or 4 1 ton trucks.

You have got to work on your negotiation skills a little. Should have told her you were looking at a class 8 truck. Compromise could have been a F450. Always ask for more that you really want. That way your fall back position is where you wanted to be anyway. Woman have this manipulation thing down to a science, they were born with it, it's in there genes. We men have to unite.......

Hey Chris,

If we don't know that the cable guy said that then we wouldn't know who the cable guy is anyway.

Man I thought you guys were speaking in code or something with the Urea and DEF. I googled it and found out what it was. I have never had a diesel but am actually looking for a used F450 diesel. When did they start requiring the use of this stuff?

Oh man, are you saying I'm hen pecked? Got to make wifey happy. I am amazed she knew the 450 chassis was considered commercial. She lets me do what I want for the most part, and push comes to shove I can do what I want, and I have my wifes permission to say so.

This stuff was all implemented in late 2007. The first wave was DPF. The next wave came in 2010 DEF.

So the late 2007's, 2008 and 2009 diesels do not have DEF?

Lets make sure we are talking about the same thing here.

In late 07 all diesel trucks had to run cleaner per the EPA. The way they did this was to put in a DPF. Diesel particulate filter. It went into the exhaust in a nut shell caught soot. As it got dirty it use a special injector in the exhaust stream to inject diesel fuel to burn it clean. This killed economy. Trucks went from getting nearly 20 mpg to 14 mpg in some cases.

What Ford and GM did next to meet the next round of emulsions requirements was to get rid of the diesel injection to clean up the DPF and they now used DEF. Diesel exhaust fluid (urea). This along with other improvements got the economy back up to pre 07 standards and maybe even a little better. Dodge did not go this route. The DPF system they had meet the new emmisons standards so they stuck with the old way of injecting diesel fuel to do the cleaning. This will probably change here in the near future as they make improvements to the engine.

Hope this helps.

Chris
