OK, you don't have to buy another tractor to get together! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Stonebase (John) was over this morning to check out and test drive my New Holland. He's the first person on TBN that I've met in person, and a heck of a nice fellow. Things are pretty muddy and wet here, so I couldn't get him to do any of my yardwork /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, but he did take my TC18 for a test drive. Here's a picture...

Maybe we can get Cerberus and other locals to join in for a Youngstown/Sharon/New Castle chapter TBN get together sometime, and maybe even have Henro drive his Kubota up from Pittsburgh. We'll all pitch in and help him drill holes in his ROPS. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Thanks again to Andy for the seat time on his New Holland. Nice machine, good ergonomics, good fit and finish.... I think I discovered another choice that just may make my final decision even more difficult...the standard transmission!!!

Andy, good luck with all your future projects in the yard. A get together someday sounds great. Here's a picture of the proud owner (AndyM)......

When I was looking to buy a tractor, I test drove a hydrostat model, and it just plain felt uncomfortable and unnatural for my foot and ankle to work the pedal. I settled for the gear model, but our property is very flat. I set it in the gear and range I need it in and I go about my work. The only time I need to switch to another gear or range is when I've stopped and I'm about to start working on something different. I simply felt that the gear model was better for my needs, although for some reason it sets everyone off every time I mention how much I love my gear model over a hydro model. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

John has driven both now, and he will have to make the same decision based on his needs.

I wanted to get the lightest tractor I could and still get a 60 inch mower. Our property is wet and the 3000 pound Ford 8N tore things up pretty bad last summer, so I settled on the TC18, which was a shade over 1400 pounds. John has 5 acres, flat and wide open, without any trees. I'm thinking he needs something a little larger, big enough to support a 72 inch mower. I think the TC30 is an excellent value (priced about the same as a TC24). He's also checked out Kubota and Kioti.

P.S. I'm jealous of the pictures of his new pole building! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Hopefully I'll be able to build one later this summer.

No reason for it set anyone off. They still make both transmissions because there's a place for both and personal preference is an important factor for any of us. Yes, I much prefer the hydrostatic for the jobs I did with my own tractors, but I have a lot more hours on old gear models and for some jobs the gear models have a definite advantage.

I've not yet used a tractor with a synchromesh transmission, but figure that has to be a great improvement. I still remember what a great improvement a synchromesh first gear was in cars.

How many of you remember which car was first with a synchromesh low and what year that was?

Hi
Bird I don't remember that but I remember having a 48 chevy with a vacuum shift when I was 16 and trying to speed shift it. I also like geared tractors, I work slow

Yep, Charlie, my first car at age 16 was a '46 Chevy with the vacuum shift. I remember there being a "kit" or something to get rid of that vacuum shift, but I never did that to mine because from what I heard, they were bad to jump out of gear if you did.

Not that we would EVER muddy the water around here

On ClassIII Boomers and all the Deeres, you have two "normal" pedals for those of us that the boomarang pedal doesn't fit.

Wow Mike,

The waters are really starting to get muddy for sure! One of the big reasons that I even started looking at gear models was my big 'ol size 14 boot getting stuck in that boomerang pedal. Now this revalation sends me back to the drawing board.

The only problem is that I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. The maximum my budget allows probably is a class II Boomer and implements (looked at a TC33DA) it has the boomerang pedal. I happened to call the local NH dealer and he told me he has a TC35 (new style) with shuttle shift for $500 less than the 33. This means 2 more HP, bigger chassis, etc... no brainer, we'll see, I'm going down there Wednesday to test drive. The hydro with dual pedals would be nice but I'm afraid it would price me over my budget.

As far as other selections there isnt a Deere dealer within a reasonable distance to me that I am comfortable buying from so that choice is eliminated. Other than that I have driven the Kubota 3130 Glide Shift gear model and the Kioti DK 35 shuttle shift which both seemed to fit my needs and budget.

Choices, choices, choices....... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Stonebase,
Ah, the decisions just keep getting harder. Don't give the DK35 short shrift. Before I ordered my LK3054XS, I test drove the DK35. In a perfect world, I would have gone bigger, more power, (insert Tim Taylor grunt here). Reality and the budget kicked in and ordered the 3054. No regrets. I thought the DK35 was a well layed out and built machine. My reasoning for not going with the NH TC30 was I was not crazy about the way the BH was set up and how far it hung out of the back. I liked the 3054 set-up better.
Best of luck in your search.

John, How did you like the DK 35? I like the sycro-shuttle, I find it fast and smooth shifting.
I had mine all shined up and ready for you to give it a try !! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I'm just glad you had a change to give one a try.
Good luck.

A TC35 reverser is a very nice machine, indeed. That would be a GREAT setup!

Am I right that reversing it does not require clutching?
