Tempurpedic confusion.

We have a friend who sells upholstery, foam etc. He made us a knockoff Tempurpedic outfit for under $300.00. We love it! There are three different kinds of foam that make up the mattress and the whole thing is about 14" high. The memory foam is naturally on top and after about two years is not sagging at all. Its still flat and just right for sleeping. We have never laid on a Tempurpedic but doubt it would be any better than the one we have.

Check around for upholstery businesses in your area, you might find a similar deal.

Ended our search for a mattress we both like with our last purchase. We used Restonic for many years, till they cheapened the quality and wouldn't hold up for more than a couple of years. We went to the memory foam and liked it less the longer we kept it, hot and imprinted after a little over a year. We then went to the Sleep Number bed and have been happy for the last 4 yrs or so. We went to the store initially because we got a flyer in the mail for the $599 special. We got a queen size with wireless remote for each side and paid ~$2000 because of the upgraded topping and cover. The bladder and pump is the same on all levels of Sleep Number and I would have been happy with the $599 special with a generic $99 topper, but I was overruled. We put the memory foam in the extra bedroom, helps with keeping the company from wearing out their welcome.;)

Check out Essentia. They make a memory foam mattress in Canada that doesn't have the nasty off gassing chemicals. They cost a bit, but my wife was having back pain on a regular mattress so we took the plunge. Been very happy ever since. Feels brand new and we've had it four years.

Good thread. Nice to hear some positive feedback on the Sleep Number.

We are what you might consider "stuck in the seventies" as we still sleep on a water bed (and like it). That said, we'll probably be shopping for a new bed in the next couple of years or so.

Our sleep number is actually in a water bed frame (California King size). We started out with a waterbed, then to a coil spring to fit and wound up with the sleep number. It worked out to be exactly the right height for the side rails.

Dutch you might want to try a thick "premium" quilted mattress pad. maybe it insulates you from the foam better than the thin one...just a thought.

We just bought a Temper-Pedic GrandBed with the Grand Ergo base from Mattress Firm. Hopefully it is the last we ever have to buy. It sleeps better than anything I have ever slept on. I have back and joint issues and after a week I sleep better than I have in years. The GrandBed is tall at 15" thick. It is not hot, in fact it is cooler than our previous Serta mattress. While this was very expensive as you get older your priorities change and a good night's sleep is high up on my list now.

We have a Temper-Pedic mattress and I wish we never bought it. What I don't like about it is that it has made me feel old. It is hard to turn over and re-position yourself and equally to hard get out of. The mattress squishes so much when you do that it becomes a real effort. A few weeks ago we stayed in a hotel up in Lake Tahoe and slept on a firmer, regular type mattress. I felt like superman when turning over and getting in and out of the bed. It was effortless and reminded me that it's not my strength that's waning (maybe a little) but the mattress that has caused me to put out way more effort than I want to when re-positioning in bed.

I also don't think it's helped my back. Some days it's more sore when I get up than when I lay down.

We have a Sleep Number. Ours has his and her sides so that the mattress for each of us is adjustable. I have some minor back problems and I can set my side pretty stiff. It helps a lot. And after five years it doesn't have any low places and doesn't need flipped. And a 25 year guarantee.

For the heat issue of memory foam mattresses check into gel infused memory foam models, they are supposed to dissipate the heat.

Sleep Number Bed. A great product. We have one queen, one king, and one in the camper.
The ability to tweak the firmness is a real plus and can make the difference between sleep and sleeping depending on the days activities and the aching body part demanding the most attention.
Yes, the dog thinks it's pretty comfortable too............
