Tempurpedic confusion.

We have a friend who sells upholstery, foam etc. He made us a knockoff Tempurpedic outfit for under $300.00. We love it! There are three different kinds of foam that make up the mattress and the whole thing is about 14" high. The memory foam is naturally on top and after about two years is not sagging at all. Its still flat and just right for sleeping. We have never laid on a Tempurpedic but doubt it would be any better than the one we have.

Check around for upholstery businesses in your area, you might find a similar deal.

This.

And if you do some online research, you can do it yourself.
A few years ago my teen-age son wanted a tempurpedic when he was due for a new bed. Not willing to pay that kind of coin, I stumbled on a "cheaperpedic" discussion on a deal site. After a bunch of reading there, and on other sites, I bought 3 different layers of foam, & a zipper cover & assembled my own. Feels just like a Tempurpedic to us. It only cost a few hundred dollars, & if something isn't to your liking, you can just change out a layer to try something different. He loves it, & has no complaints about it being too warm, even though he's always warm otherwise.
At the time, we had a fairly new bed ourselves, but my wife just decided she wants me to put one together for us.

I remember how bad our bed was before we bought our Tempurpedic. The mattress is amazing, we have it now for 7 years. The only thing I did not like about it was the offgasing. It takes a few weeks for the gas bubbles in the mattress to get out and during that time I was getting headaches from the fumes. If you can have the company open the plastic bag and let it start off gassing ahead of time. Once it was done offgasing I was fine and would recommend it to anyone.

There are have been a couple mattress discussions on TBN over the years and what amazes me is the consistent good reviews of the sleep number bed.

We bought a Dormia foam mattress at the recommendation of our back cracker. We have had the mattress for 8ish years and it is holding up just fine. We have not noticed it being warmer than a regular mattress. Maybe this is an individual issue. We do notice the difference in mattresses when we travel. Usually we notice that the hotel mattress is just not as comfortable as our Dormia. The only beds we have found acceptable have been at a couple of high end Disney resorts. We are in a Disney "time share" and the rooms only cost us about $100 a night while non owners/members pay around $500 a night! Disney does use better mattresses in the more expensive resorts and our backs have noticed the quality.

What is really odd about the foam mattress was how light it was when it was compressed in it's shipping wrap. The store was out of bed frames when the bed was delivered and we had to buy a frame from another store so I had to install the mattress. No biggy, right? Well, air weighs something that is for sure because when the shipping wrap was cut off and the mattress expanded it was VERY difficult for me to move the mattress. Unreal how heavy that thing got.

When we have to replace our mattress we will look at sleep number because of what has been said on TBN.

Later
Dan

My wife saw your post on the 'build your own" mattress and was wondering what sources you found on line for the various types of foam and what specific foams worked well. Any details would be much appreciated.

My husband and I were waking up in pain everyday. We tried an online sleep by number knock off. We loved the adjustable bed frame but the mattress was like a camping air mattress with no more support on the sides than the middle. He listed toward the edge and had to hang on. Pump was like a loud vacuum. No sleeping through that. It went back. We made sure to have bought one with an unconditional return policy so we got all our money back, but we had to have an immediate replacement. Sleep Like the Dead reviews were very helpful. We bought the real Sleep By Number. Love it. We can change it as needed after a hard day's work. Normally 55 to 85. Herniated disk for him, pinched nerve for me- we can change it drastically. I'm at a ridiculous 5 and he's at 35 for a few weeks without any extra expense. I don't wake up brittle, we stay in the same room. Mattress fluctuates as needed. Just wish we our backs didn't need it to but thankful for the relief. Loved the 8 year old basic Temperpedic I slept on during a recent sleep study. It matched my needs perfectly for that night. But the sleep by number matches both our needs, every night. Someday we'll get the adjustable bed frame. It is a true luxury and aids with getting out of bed when it becomes difficult (the head raising you up makes it so much easier when you hurt). We'll need to go up to Split King for that, but don't really have the room now. That is the only change I would make.

I'm just trying to figure that out now because my wife wants one, but it was about 4 years ago but I'm having a hard time re-tracing my steps. One thing I remember for sure was that I wanted at least 4lb & preferably 5lb density on the memory foam top layer

Edit:

I believe I got it thru Foam Factory (foambymail.com), but I didn't order a complete mattress because I didn't want it glued together in case I wanted to change out a layer. I read there was no need to have them attached, so I just ordered the components & put them together inside a zipper cover of appropriate dimensions (they sell those too)

Dutch you might want to try a thick "premium" quilted mattress pad. maybe it insulates you from the foam better than the thin one...just a thought.
we picked one of those quilted pads up, and it did help with the temps. but, a drawback was that with the
memory foam, we "sink" into a spot and stay there for most of the nite. after a couple weeks, we had really
"trenched" the mattress pad, to the point we had to strip it off the bed and push the batting back in place. I was
ready to send that back for a refund, and we put that topper on our old mattress and found it doesn't "trench" nearly
as bad because we don't sink down into the mattress like we did on the foam.
so, we have been using that config for a year or so now and pretty happy with it.
one of the factors in picking up that tempur bed was my son had a mattress that his mother bought him
that came rolled up in a tube, as dmmcarty said, and we tried that for a little while while he was gone
at school, and liked it, although it was only a full size not queen so it didn't fit real well on the bed.
i'll be darned we can't find a tag identifying a manufacturer...

We looked at mattresses a couple of years ago. Narrowed it down to a Sleep Number or Tempurpedic. Settled on the $2,400 Tempurpedic King. Big mistake after about six month the bed developed two valleys to sleep in. Roll up hill to turn over, or get out of the bed. Complained about the mattress exceeding the one and one half inch indent. A Rep shows up and advised normal and the mattress performed as advertised and was form fitting to the body.

Will never buy another Tempurpedic product, back to looking at a sleep number and will have to eat the loss on the Tempurpedic.

The only way you'd have a valley with a sleep number is if someone lowered the air pressure. By the way, when you get one, make sure and get the pillow top option, well worth it if you sleep on your stomach.
