I successfully took apart my temp gauge without breaking the glass. If I am lucky I will be able to insert a cleaner backing and get it to work properly.
I have seen a post explaining how these electrical gauges work. It seems like the ones that are wired straight to the coolant system would be more desirable. Took many variables in the electrical connections on these OEM types.

I don't know if anyone has tried this before but I thought that I would share the moment. It can be done.

Kent, that has to be the worst looking gauge I have ever seen. I would not even attempt to restore it. I would buy another one unless you just like a challenge. Good luck.

I imagine you're right. I have been making a list of items to order from the New Holland dealer (nearest place 50 miles). The temp gauge is on my list but in the mean time I'll tinker with what I've got.
I ordered a standard (universal) temp gauge assembly that didn't fit, likewise the one from TSC didn't fit.

Yeah, that gauge is awful, Kent. Toss it.

The good news is that at least your gauge is modular. Many newer tractors have the
gauge built into the gauge cluster.

These units are not precise at all, and operate (usually) off a bimetal strip with a coil
of wire around it. The sending unit controls, roughly, how much current goes thru the
coil. I would keep looking for a used or new unit off another vehicle, or another generic
meter from a store, or off eBay.
