Although his face and name have become synonymous with the band, Phil Collins was actually the third drummer and second singer of the band Genesis. He was preceded on drums by Chris Stewart, then John Mayhew, and most famously on vocals by Peter Gabriel.

The four-year span (1971 - 1975) with Collins on drums and Gabriel on vocals is considered widely the "golden lineup" by most die-hard Genesis fans, although the two albums that followed prior to the departure of Steve Hacket (1977) are still considered among their best by many, as well as the pre-Collins Trespass (1970).

By the time they gained super-stardom in the 1980's, they were making the sort of pop music found completely intolerable by their earlier hardcore prog-rock fans.
