When I was in Italy back in the 80's, Pizza did not exist outside of the Naples area.

You could get small flat rounds like focacias with stuff on them, but usually not cheese or tomato sauce. Mostly tomatoes or veggies and some fine sliced meat.
When we asked for Pizza in Rome, Lyon etc. they told us to go to the bakery since Pizza just means Pie.

Now Pizza is available everywhere in Italy and the whole region. It still does not look like american pizza (thankfully), but that is what drove it into the european culture.

So Naples --> US WWII soldiers --> US--->rest of europe and rest of Italy.
