Teflon Oil Additive in A vintage Tractor?

I have a question about adding a Teflon oil additive EX. (Slick-50) to a vintage tractor. Is this suggested or better not even thought about? I have to throttle all the way up on start-up and it just makes me a bit edgy in the cold weather to run it at full throttle before I get oil circulating /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I wanted to know from people who have owned older tractors.

Personally I would not recommend adding TFE type additives to any engine. Just use the proper good grade of oil, or if you are concerned about startup wear, perhaps a synthetic oil or blend. they are supposed to be better about that problem.

Hi Soberly, The things I've read about teflon indicate that it protects by leaving a film on metal parts and sometimes the "film" will separate from the metal and float around in the oiling system in sheets large enough to stop up oil passages. My rationalization is that a vintage tractor might have even wider tolerances that would allow even more space for these potential floaters build up in the engine. I only know what I read about the teflon, so take this as an opinion only.

Just curious, why do you have to throttle all the way up at startup ?

I tried to start at half throttle, against the previous owners suggestions and ended up flooding it out. I've seen him start it several different times using his prescibed method and every single time it worked. The one time I thought maybe I'll try it my way it ended up flooding out pretty bad... There may be some carb. adjustments needed, but I know for sure it runs his way of starting. I am going today to get new Spark plugs and wires, as one of the wires is, what I believe to be, the carbon type and not copper core. This may also be part of the start up problem...

I also have to check into the float possibly sticking as it has some of those symptoms also....Run good for awhile...start to chug a bit, push in clutch and runs fine, tap on after market Fuel filter (also going to get replaced) and runs fine. The gentleman that sold it to me seemed to think it was the fuel filter plugging up, but it could be the float and tapping the fuel filter releases the float also... I have to look further, but maybe on a warmer day

I'd stay away from slick 50.. I'd instead spend my money on a tune up.. and use the correct oil for my temperature range, and oil pressure. It's not uncommon to need a little choke for old gas tractors using points... Just don't over do it.
