Clutch pressure extends ram end 16 to get drive thru the planetaries. Partial pull back of steering lever removes clutch pressure from end 16 allowing planetaries to spin free and stop drive to sprockets. Full pull back of steering lever uses clutch pressure to extend ram end 18 and apply brake on one side. Foot brake also can apply leverage on the brake levers thru bars 1 and 2 which are weak points. Either the ends brake off of 1 or the pivot point on 2 breaks. If both steering and foot brake, which use the same brakes, are bad, suspect brake pads.

Thanks , the guy i bought it from said he adjusted it on the side that didn't work . He said it did not make a difference. I'll have to take cover off to fix foot brake i think . If i do that i can adjust everything to spec. It's looking like i have no option to fix properly .
If i adjust the brake too far can i damage anything , maybe allow steel to steel if pads are bad ? it would be good to limp it back to a better place to work on it .

Someone has been in there before the guy i bought from had it . He said the foot brake never worked . He was on flat ground and never a problem . I'm in goat country and would feel much safer with a brake. when i lifted floor the shaft from the pedal is missing so if i want to fix it i really need to open her up i think to see what has been done before and whats missing.

The brake disc can slide on the shaft. When you apply the brake (steering or foot) the brake shoe pushes the disc from the inside against the back-up shoe (10 in diagram). When you tighten the exterior brake adjust bolt it moves the back-up shoe inward toward the disc. Too tight will make the brake drag all the time and wear quickly. If the shoes are worn off it will be metal that wears.

When you pull the big cover under the seat you’ll see all the goodies, that red circle is where the brake rod connects, simple rod and clevis there, easily fabricated if you can’t find one, in the next photo the actuators are removed, the yellow circle is the outside brake pad, this is what the adjustment bolt on the outside pushes against, the inner disc is what locks the planetary to make the machine move, pretty simple setup, getting to it is a chore but it’s not too bad compared to other machines in my opinion.

Thanks, I think i should pull the cover. I don't want to wreck the discs and make a huge job out of what seems simple. I talked to a brake reline mob here in australia . They can reline pads for me. Would you know the thickness of factory ones ?. I suppose it's not too important as it seems there is heaps of adjustment.

I just got covid so this will be on the back burner for a few weeks.

Well best of luck with that, had it a couple times myself, wasn’t really much to it, hopefully it’ll pass quickly for you.

Feeling a bit better so i at least wanted to pull strainer. It confirmed to me anyway i'll have to do the pads. lots of junk and fine steel wires, bits of the pads i think, and probably why the pressure dropped, I could not get the filter off. Looks to me like a screw in outer with drop in filter and the bolt on bottom is just a drain . Is this right ? . I went into town and bought a tool to unscrew it.

On mine the bolt runs through the center top to bottom. Remove bolt/nut to get at the replaceable cartrige.
