Well I guess it probably is the seals on one or both cylinders. I didn't see exactly what my son-in-law did but it sure sounded like the same thing I've done over and over again. Cedar trees in these parts are not too hard to pull out with a rootgrapple, if you have enough tractor for the job. I have pulled out a lot of trees and not had a problem. I wonder what might have been different this time.

Anybody done this kind of repair before?

Can the cylinders just be removed and taken to a hydraulic shop for repair?

I've repacked 2 zylinders of my 18LA, due to internal leaking. My dealer took those apart and repacked them right in my yard. Was a 3 hr job under warranty. If the zylinder comes out further than it used to, there is some internal damage. I put my finger on the packing and on that nut, that holds it all together. If that came loose... or that bolt broke off... well... there we go.

Did you get it fixed yet? Just curious...

If the rod is out more normal it most likely popped the nut off the rod for the piston blowing the packing would not let the rod come out to far

I agree.

I went on a hunting trip last week therefore I couldn't pickup my tractor as soon as it was ready. Got it last weekend.

According to the workorder, the nut came off one cylinder and the seals were blown on the other cylinder. They also said one of the "dog bones" was bent and they straightened it. I thought they would have just replaced the dog bone. The charge was $132 for removing it, straightening it, and reinstalling. The cylinder repair was in warranty though.

The dog bone is still not perfectly straight like a new one would be. Therefore I don't believe it will hold up over time. I think I might complain about them straightening it instead of replacing and maybe I'll get a replacement at cost.

The issue with it not being straight is not it breaking again.. but rather having non aligned holes at the ends now..

I had the same EXACT THING happen yesterday. 18LA loader on a TC55DA. It stripped the nut, threads and all, right off the end of that internal rod assembly. I took it to a machine shop and he machined new threads on the end of the shaft and gave me a new 5/8 lock nut. I put new seals in that curl cylinder and put all back together but NO CURL POWER UP STILL!!!! I added fluid and cracked the lines to try and bleed the air but NO GO. I'm wondering if it could have stripped the nut on the other side too or blown something in a check valve or control valve??? I have curl power down but not up????? HELP

If you install a hyd gage you would know what the trouble was.

If you have no pressure while curling down, or no movement with lever to the right, then the fluid is flowing, but no work being done.

I can tell you what caused it also.

Your bucket hit something hard causing the mechanical action of the bucket to pull the rod off the piston.

Look at your bucket close and see if you see any damage.

Your other cyl might be damaged also.

I was lifting a big stump full of rock and dirt, I was shaking it to get the dirt out and let it curl down too hard with that much weight. I think I found the problem, I took the other cylinder apart and the same thing, the not was stripped right off the end of the shaft.

Now, you will have to decide whether to replace the nut, rod or both.

You might can re-thread the rod

Then reseal the nuts with Loctite.

Ditto, depends in how bad the rod is, check it for try as well to make sure no bend.

In a pinch I have welded and rethreaded, staying away from chrome.. Nit ideal but could work
