TC40D
Hi all,
I'm a new member( proven by virtue of the fact that I slipped this into the wrong forum the first time around...sorry) who's been lurking and learning for about a year. I am yet to actually _own_ a tractor, but while closing in on a 30+ hp diesel with an FEL, ( TC 33D)
I stumbled on a larger tractor that has caught my eye. I'm going to take a look at it on Friday

The asking price is 17K for a TC40D w/ 700 hrs, a FEL, supersteer, R4 tires and a hydro trans. As I had sought out the elusive used TC 33D w/ the same specs for several weeks, I was pleasantly surprised to find this larger tractor for what I seem to think is a pretty attractive price. Checking the specs, I was impressed with the increased hydraulic capacity and 3pt load capacity. Any TC40 owners wanna weigh in on the 'perceived' value here?

choreboy...Welcome !!

I run a TC35D which is about 92 % of a TC40D. I only have 3 cylinders and a bit less horsepower, but effectively the same tractor on all other points.

First off, the difference between a NH class II and a class III Boomer is quite extensive. Not only is the HP higher, the chasis is larger, the hydro drive system is different, the PTO system is different.......

Have you operated a TC33D and a TC40D ? I don't think its right to compare unless you have at least a test run on each.

The bigger question is what are you looking to be able to do with the tractor ? The extra mass of the Class III can help in some instances, but may hurt with mowing and working in tight quarters.

As for the price...looks good to me, but I can see or touch the tractor so what do I know !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

PS: Don't be afraid to fill in your Bio....we're all pretty friendly here !!!

I'm not actually comparing the two it was just one of those situations where this one jumped at me when I realized the price range was closer to some used 33D's I'd priced with the same features.

My primary needs are for mowing 12+ acres with a rotary mower, plowing 500 ft of driveway, skidding logs for firewood and whatever else I can find to do with it.

I gotta say it's more tractor than I started searching for but feel it's not overboard for my use & needs......

Operate? Heck no, not this one.... I've been to the JD yard and fooled around on a used 4200, and spent a few hours on a neighbors old JD 4020 for some FEL work a year ago,but this is a new experience for me.....

I'd look really closely at both Class II and Class III tractors and give both of them a drive to see how they feel. With the Class III you get a lot of big tractor features that are nice, but you also get a much larger/heavier machine. I didn't see anything on your list that either tractor wouldn't do just fine.

...and that 40D price is good, but that tractor probably sold for around $22,000 new, so you can see what depreciation to figure. Be sure to open the hood and examine the area around the battery. If there's any damage, demand it be repaired before taking delivery.

Jim,

Sorry if I 've missed this in earlier posts, but have there been 'issues' /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif with TC's battery compartment in the past? Thanks for the caveat.....does this apply to all used TC's?

Thanx

Define issues !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Main issues with Class III Boomers:

1. Battery offgasing causing corrosion around battery and cooler. ( Some of us has gone to sealed batteries ala Optima )

2. No-joy joystick breaking at the screw hole for handle. ( New part engineered differently and fixes the problem )

3. Low-temp running due to flow bypass at common coolant drain line. ( Easy to fix with a 1/4" ball valve and two hose clamps )

4. Coolant leak at fitting adjacent to oil filter ( Requires new part or reinstallation with high grade thread sealant )

Did I miss any of the common ones ???

Jim, I hope you don't mind me chiming in here /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif!!

5. Sticky/sluggish hydro pedals (clean, lube, and cautious operation seem to be the "cure").

Anyone else got more? I think the operative words here are "common problems" and I won't list all my little ones. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yiiiikes!, /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Other than those problems, should be good to go, right? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Makes me realize how my lack of operating experience is a real handicap. Thanks for the input, yet again guys.....

Here's my first dumb question of the day

re: Low-temp running due to flow bypass ....what's normal op temp? Can I expect to reach it in 15-20 minutes of checkout?

As for the others I'll just inspect closely at the points you mentioned and see if there are any indications.

All in all as jinman adds, these are somewhat common to this design and fairly easy to correct/ workaround??

choreboy, other than the battery issue, the others items are mostly just headaches that are very cheap and quite easy ( sort-of ) to fix. I think they're good to be aware of, but if I found a good tractor at a good price, I'd definitely overlook them and correct the issues later. The battery may cost you $ 150 to replace, but everything else is under $ 30 or so for each.

Good luck on your quest /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif.
