This is driving me crazy. Some days my tractor works just fine. Other days, the throttle will NOT stay where I put it. It creeps down below 2000 rpm. If it was always one way or the other, I'd be fine with it.

Is there something else going on, or should I just open up that wrap around cowling and find the friction nut and tighten it up?

And another question: At what engine rpm is a TC-40 PTO at 540rpm? My 540 lite never comes on.

.

Tighten the nut at the friction disc. Better yet, double nut it. 10MM nut, IIRC.

The green PTO light on TC40D comes on around 2600 RPM and the red overspeed light comes on around 2800.

Thanks for both responses.

I just don't understand why some days it is fine.

There are four 13mm bolts to remove to get the cowling off. Two of them are under the steering wheel and two are on the right side "firewall" after you open the hood. You'll see three bolts, but only the two lower bolts need be removed. Be careful of the ignition switch electrical connection. You will see that the throttle is a very simple device and easy to adjust. RickB has the solution for keeping it in place. Before you put the bolts back in on the cowling, a daub or grease to each bolt will ensure they come out easily next time. I had one recently that corroded and the captive nut spun in the plastic cowling. Now I only need to take out three bolts on that side on my tractor.

appreciate the info, Jinman - got it apart and adjusted the throttle friction nut; no threads left on the stud so I guess I would have to shift to thin nuts to double nut it. Tightened it up and it works good. Now we'll see how long it lasts. Thanks, guys!
