TC40 Electrical Starting Problems

Hey Guys-

I went out to feed today and found the battery on my TC40 was low but it did try to turn over. I didnt want to hut anything so I stopped when the starting wound down really slow. I went and got my pickup and jumper cables and hooked them to the tractor battery like I have before. When I tried to crank the tractor this time it turned over and then didnt stop when I disengaged the key.

I hopped off the tractor and pulled the jumper cables. Now when I turn the key, I dont have any dash lights at all and the starter wont engage. Its like the tractor is completely electrically dead.

Please help guys, with a big snow coming tomorrow I sure would like to get it running ASAP.

Sorry about that.

There should be an in-line fuse in the positive battery cable. Check that cable from the battery to the starter.

Sounds like a starter solenoid issue too.

Josh, the only thing that can cause your starter to stay engaged is a faulty starter solenoid with its contacts welded together so it will not disengage. That could also be a reason that your battery is discharging abnormally. I think you need to look closely at that starter with its built-in solenoid. Of course, your main 40 amp fuse probably also blew to protect your battery and the rest of the electrical system. The 40 amp fuse is normally located just above the starter under a protective rubber cover. You may also need to look closely at your other fuses too. Fuse #2 (2nd from left) is the fuse that supplies normal engagement current to the starter solenoid. If it is blown, you normally see the PTO light as soon as the key is turned on even though the PTO is not engaged. Of course, the 40 amp fuse has to be good for any of these indications. With the 40 amp blown, most of the electrical system will be dead, but power is still available at the starter. Starting power is straight from the battery and does not go through any fuse.

EDIT: You could have a shorted key switch or bad starter relay that could keep your starter engaged, but I'd look first at the solenoid right on the starter.
