My '98 New Holland TC29D wouldn't start, so we checked the battery (good) and then the starter (bad). We bench tested it and the pinion would turn but not go out. So we bought a new starter, bench tested it and it was good. Installed it on the tractor, and it would do the CLICK but wouldn't turn the flywheel. Removed it and checked the flywheel, which moved freely. Bench tested the new starter AGAIN, it was good, so we reinstalled it. Still no joy! All total we have R and R'd both starters a half dozen times. Anybody got any ideas?

Is it possible the large main + battery power wire is not conducting the current to the main starter post??
this would be possible if there is a separate fuse box power wire from the + battery terminal and corrosion is hampering the large wires ability to carry current to the starter main power post.
It would also allow the solenoid to engage but since no power is available at the main starter terminal the starter will not spin...
Ground fault problem from the battery to engine ground can also play a role in inadequate power transfer to the starter. which could mimic what you are seeing.
One other thought - Are you sure that when the solenoid clicks on, that with the starter installed- that the pinion is FULLY engaging the ring gear?? If not the solenoids internal main power contacts May not be able to (make) and therefore no power will go to the starter brushes and therefore no spin... Is there sufficient starter gear to ring gear teeth clearance?? ( Hard to tell on tractors with no way to see the two when engaged)...

Just wondering if you had any success getting the tc29 to start ??
Hey, thanks for all the good gouge! We rechecked the ground, found it good. Replaced the battery, which was indicating a bad cell anyway, but that didn't do the trick either. So did some more reading, took off the right panel to check the relays. The far right one (Bosch 86529089) made a whining sound. So we switched around the other relays since they had the same part number; no joy. So checked the power to the glow plugs, found one wire not so tight. Resecured it. Then bypassed the ignition switch and the relays and got the sweetest sound of the engine turning over! So now the question is: replace the glow plug timer NGK S81NF, or the ignition switch NH 86569718? I've read other posts and found on Ebay that (Kubota's) NGK S81NL is the same animal. Also that the NAPA KS6600 ignition switch is the ticket! New Holland at Messicks's wants $106 for the lamptimer and $75 for the switch! Must be gold in them thar parts!
