I recently came across a TC29D New Holland with an Hour meter and tach that does not work. Does anyone happen to know what wire coming off the alt sends the signal to the dash for the hour meter and tach? I have checked all the fuses and no luck. Any other suggestions would be great on what to check.

On my tractor, it's a light pink wire. It's in a connector on the opposite side from a connector with two wires. The tach output is a single conductor connector. My tractor is a TC45D, but the alternators should be similar in design.

Anyone have any experience on how much a new instrument cluster runs?

You don't have to replace the whole instrument panel. The tach is replaceable and is about $120, part no. 86540854. If you replace the whole instrument cluster the price is. . .hold your breath. . .$701.

would just the tach part fix it? I assume these go out often ?

also does the tach drive the hour meter? I believe it does.

The tach and hour meter are separate, but they both work off the same signal from the tach. If one is loading down the signal, it could have an effect on the other one. I have details for my tractor, but I don't have details for yours, so I'm not going to take a chance of telling you something wrong. All the wires, connector numbers, and pin numbers would be different for your tractor. This just underlines how important it is to have an Operator's Manual with the tractor. If you don't have one, you need to get one because it has electrical schematics.

Thanks for your help. I bite the bullet and ordered just the tach today. I am getting a signal from the alt to the dash so I hope that the new tach will get everything going again. There are 4 connectors that go to the tach so I am thinking that one of them feeds to the hour meter. We shall see what happens. Again thanks for the help!

Since you have the tachometer out, flip it over and take these readings with an ohmeter. If it is significantly different or open, then the tach is considered bad. Be sure and orient the tach as shown from the rear.
