I'm considering adding a water temp, oil pressure, battery voltage package to my TC-40D and my question is will I need the metric adapters or is this SAE?

I am swaying towards the electronic guages since the capillary tube to the oil pressure guage ruptered on my last tractor. Anyone have any experience with the electronic vs dependability?

Mike, I suspect that information is very hard --almost impossible-- to find in print. The parts catalog just lists the sending unit and not the size of the threads. Many years ago I put an oil pressure gauge on a Datsun and it came with several adapters in the kit. If I was a betting man, I'd bet the threads are metric. New Holland lists a special test fitting part number NH00011 that is used to attach an external oil pressure testing gauge. If it comes down to matching the threads, at least the sending unit is easily removed. You could take it with you to an auto parts dealer and use it to find an adapter that will match.

If you get that done - please post all about it with pics .. I've been wanting gauges on my 45 from day 1 - just havn't gone there yet. bad news helps too ... stops everybody from going down the same bad road.

My TN is part SAE and part metric.
Eaxmple: Lug nuts are 1.25", and the fuel tank drain plug requires a 6 mm (or was it 6.5 mm) allen wrench. Go figure /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I suppose you could measure the threads in question and find out.

Is the better choice electronic oil or the old style with tubing?

Those 1 1/4" lugnuts are either 30 or 32 mm. I don't know exactly because I've never owned a metric wrench that size, 1 1/4" standard fits well and I've rarely had to mess with metric hardware that size. To tell if a bolt is standard or metric look at the markings on the bolt head, bolts with radial lines are standard and bolts with numbers are metric.

Electrical/electronic gets my vote. If you break the wire, it's a simple repair. If you break a tube, it's a difficult repair and if you don't notice it quickly, all your oil runs out on the ground. I'd use the tubing style for calibration or checking the electrical type sender only. These plumbed gage setups are so cheap you can rig up one to use as a special tool anytime you want to use it.

Being that the engine on your tractor is Japanese built I'd be willing to bet that the threads are British Standard Pipe. That's really what "metric" pipe threads are. Don't you love it when you want a simple answer and some butthead gets technical? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Since you're going through the trouble of hanging gauges, go to this site, click on products and check out the Switchgauges. We use to hang them on every piece of equipment we sold when I worked at an IH dealership. These gauges are designed to shut off the engine when it overheats or loses oil pressure. I imagine you could wire them to set off a siren and flash a light instead if that's what you wanted. Give it a thought because you're never looking at the gauges when it blows a hose or you ram a stick through the oil filter.

Jim I suspected that the electronic were the better choice but I wanted to see if anyone else had a different opinion. I am thinking about an overhead mounting beneath my fiberglass canopy and if this is the location that I decide to use then the mechanical guages would not be practical for this location anyway.
I guess I'll have to pull the current temp and oil pressure sending unts to find out if they are indeed metric. My guess is that they are since the engine is made over the pond. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
The safety shutoff switches that another post recommended might also be a consideration in this project as well.
I'm going to jump over to Summit Racing and see what they offer in the way of a mount kit.
We'll add to this post as we progress.

If someone comes up with a good set of safety shutoff switches for the class III Boomers, they would have a product that would sell. I am thinking about some gages we had in the US Navy that had a set point which could trip and send out an alarm. If this alarm were rigged to shut the tractor down, you'd have a really neat gadget. One problem though... you would want an audible alarm to go off instead of shutting down your tractor instantly. I can think of many, many places I would not want my tractor to shut down under any circumstance. One of those is when I'm backing down the side of my pond dam. If the tractor shuts off, I get to swim. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I don't think I'd like that little surprise. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
