TC40D
My new TC40D has a loud chatter noise coming from the housing where the H.S.T. system oil filter connects. It chatters at idle and on and off at various rpm's. I can also feel a vibration in the lines at that point with my hand. The tractor had only 2.4 hours on it when the dealer inspected the problem. The dealer put an additional 4.5 hours on the tractor and said NH is looking into the problem and that most of these tractors have some chatter noise (the problem was not corrected). That is hard to believe---so if most of you are experiencing this problem, please let me know so I can sleep at night. I don't want to put any more hours on the tractor until the problem is solved. Total hours on tractor now is 7.6 hours.

Several people have noted this chatter problem and reported it on this forum. I actually looked up the hydraulic flow once, and if my memory serves me, it was a diverter valve right on top of the HST fiter that made the noise mostly at idle. I'm a little deaf, so I've never noticed it on my TC45D. I hope you get your problem resolved.

My TC35D does the same thing...sort of !!

When initially started, I hear a bit of what can be described as 'marbles' in the hydro housing. This lasts only a few seconds / minute until the fluid warms up. When everything is warmed...its quite quiet. Does your's quiet down after a few ??

I do remember reading somewhere here about somebody getting a new filter housing / head under warranty. Maybe try a search.

Good luck!!

catfishsteved,
I have the same tractor and sadly the same problem. It sure is annoying. If your dealer solves your problem please let me know. By the way I have 136 hrs on mine and it still does it. Worse when it is cold outside.

catfish, I believe the problem, as Jim describes somewhat, is in the valve on top of the hydro filter. Jim posted a diagram sometime ago and it showed a small steel ball and spring in this housing. I think the ball serves as a pressure relief valve and has to do with the fluid cooler in front of the radiator. I've been half tempted to pull the spring and ball out, stretch the spring ever so slightly and reinstall, just to see if this slighty increased pressure is enough to stop the vibration sound. Worst thing is I'd have to buy a new spring if it didn't work. Let us know if you hear of a "NH - Approved" fix.

Has anyone pulled this valve apart? Any opinion on what would happen if the spring was stretched ever so slightly, to seat the ball a little tighter?

I have a TC30 with the same noise. It just started at about 25 hours, It does not go away, I just put on headphones and don't worry about it. If anyone finds a fix please let us know.

Duane, that valve is in parallel with the HST cooler. If you stretch the spring and increase its relief pressure, it could cause you to overpressure the cooler and possibly do some damage. The fluid from the HST charge pump (booster pump) is drawn from the reservoir, through the charge pump, and through the cooler. The function of the charge pump is to supply low pressure fluid (300 psi) to the HST pump. Its pressure also is used to change the swashplate position between when you select rabbit or turtle. The HST pump on our class III boomers takes the 300 psi fluid and boosts it up to 5000 psi to operate the output hydraulic motor of the HST transmission (I'm talking maximum pressure before the relief valve opens.). Anyhow, 300 psi is a lot of pressure to put through a radiator type cooler and I think the relief valve which makes the noise is necessary and critical. Because it sits atop the HST filter, it's easy to think that it is a filter bypass if the filter becomes clogged, but that is not the case. I think until New Holland comes up with a quieter valve, people should just get used to the noise and accept that it's a bit loud. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Thanks to all who made comments to my questions. Dealer said not to worry about time on tractor so I worked the FEL hard for two days and the tractor was a pleasure to operate. Performance was excellent. I went from an antiquated MF to a piece of equipment that I am proud to own. Just get used to the chatter noise and everything else is great. Going to purchase cutter bar and grill guard, then I think i'm set.

OK I know this is a little dated but this is my exact issue with my tractor. but this is an older unit since mine is a 2007 model. Good to know which valve it is and that it is normal. Wish Jim was still around to thank him for all his information!!!!
