I was using the tractor today and all of a sudden, for no apparant reason, the RPMs dropped to the point that the machine was very sluggish.

I was way out in a field with a loader full of mulch, so I dropped the load where I was and then slowly got the machine back the 300 or so feet to where my husband could look at it.

He says that the oil levels are fine, hydrolic fluid levels are fine, and it has plenty of diesel in it. (He checked this stuff, and I think he checked the battery too).

He is hoping you folks can help him figure out what the problem is, and what to do about it.

He changed all the filters about six weeks ago, and I think he changed the hydralic oil at the same time. (I can find out for certain when he comes in, but right now, he's out building a fence on the back 40).

He also changed the oil at that time.

He said something about some kind of valve that was stuck and he could never get it unstuck, and so it ended up that some air got into the fuel system at that time, so he bled the fuel system of all the air in it.

But that was 6 weeks or so ago, and the tractor has worked fine since then, except for yesterday when it was dripping some oil, and so he put a new oil filter on it and topped the oil tank. For reasons we do not understand, our local New Holland dealer sold us a third party oil filter the first time (even though we always replace stuff with New Holland brand parts), and he didn't know it was a third party filter until he went back yesterday to buy another oil filter. The one he bought yesterday, though, IS a New Holland oil filter.

I guess the tractor had about 1 to 2 hour's worth of service between the time he changed the oil filter and when the RPMs suddenly went lower (ie, the power significantly dropped), though that service would have been split between yesterday and today.

He will be in soon and will be glad to answer your questions. He knows mechanical things better than I do.

We are hoping that you folks might be willing to help us find the source of this problem, and what to do about it.

Thank you in advance for your insights and suggestions.

Sincerely,
Mrs. GreenAcres

diesels that suddenly lose rpm.. or can't pickup rpm generally are fuel starved.

you can have a full tank of diesel, and a pit of crud the size of a peddle inthe fuel tank tap and that's enough to starve her out.

btdt... got the oily t-shirt after having to pull and blow out a fuel tap in the field miles form home with my thumb stuck intot he bottom of the fuel tank to -slow- the escape of fuel while I sucked and blew theru the very tasty fuel tap! thank goodness I had a hammer a pair of gas pliers and a huge adjustable wrench in my tool box... ;)

Remove fuel filter and see if there is anything in bowl. While filter is off; open valve and make sure you have good flow of fuel from tank. Replace fuel filter if needed and remove fuel line at injector and make sure you have good flow there. If you have good flow to injector; rebleed and hopefully it runs fine. If not, may have and injector bad. Make sure air filter is clean also.

Have you checked the air filter for an obstruction (e.g. mouse nest)?
