I was looking at a TBN chart for several different oils, Including the Mobil supersyn. I was wondering why the TBN rate was 5.0 and other oils are up around 9.0,12.0, even 14. Do diesel motors require a higher TBN? It all kinda confuses me.

the higher the TBN the better the oil. That is the quick and easy version. As you use the oil the TBN drops as an exponential function. It is not linear. So the more you use the oil the lower the TBN becomes.
And yes diesel need a higher # since there are very acidic. I would stay away from TBN lower then 9 but that is me.

I,ve heard that Delvac 1300 super is fine to use in gasoline motors.
The Delvac has a 12 on th TBN chart, But My 04 F-150 calls for a 5W20 so I went with the 0W20 mobil Super syn which has a TBN of
5. I've got a free oil test kit on the way so I'll see what is is or isnt doing. I tryed to post the TBN chart but I'ts to big.

I would also look at the ZDDP also.
If you are using normal to slightly longer drain intervals, then lower levels of ZDDP (zinc diaryldithiophosphate) really don't matter that much. If you run drain intervals less then 10,000 miles. The Amsoil, XL-7500 Series oils contain low levels of ZDDP comparable to Mobil 1, but they are only intended for 7500 mile drains.
Also levels of ZDDP prevent excessive oxidative thickening over extended drain intervals. But again if you are not using the full service life of the oil, why bother with a high ZDDP or a group 4 or 5.
So pay attention to Zinc/Moly, Phosphorus, Boron & Ca and TBN for a good oil. Some oil at price X are lower and some are higher.
